Car: Working on my car

Post

Well as of 9:38 PM my car has lost some number of cylinder integrity. I got off work tonight early and was going out and about to visit some friends and I decided to put some gas in, light wasn't on but it would have come on within 4 more miles. I ALWAYS watch the gas people but I was on the phone this time and told the guy to pump V-Power like I always do. Well on my way home I hit full boost in 3rd-4th and ya, ping, ping, BOOOM. Ya he put 87 octane in it. I am sure I blew the **** out of the ringlands again. Well after frantically yelling at the gas station I found my receipt (2.51 gallons of pure 87 piss water) and they basically said they are ****ing screwed. So tomorrow I get to go in and see what compensation I get. Forged Pistons and Rods are a reality at this point but it just sucks that I will have to go through a rebuild....again. This time it wasn't my fault. Oh well, figured I should let you guys know. Life is funny sometimes.

I'm sure this brings bad memories to other people on this forum. Sorry to hear that someone else caused your engine to blow. So are you going to be able to get them to pay for the rebuild?

good thing u werent the one that put in the 87 piss water. i think ever since i was old enough to lift the fuel pump, i have pumped my own gas. u probably will never let another put gas in ur car, EVER! lol. hey nothing like Shell Inc. picking up the tab for a built engine........maybe u could persuade them to pay for two and for a rental car for you to get around in?

That sucks, worst feeling blowing the motor. So you pump full serve, do they charge extra like they do in Cali?

Oregon doesn't allow you to pump your own gas, they always do it for you...

Make sure to check your gas octane level after you go with forged internals, they will blow just like the stock ones do with detonation.

I'm working on a system for this exact thing right now. More to come in the near future.

I was thinking the same thing. Havnt seen a full service station since i was living in PA back in the 80'sThat so sucks you can't pump your own gas there. Move to NC, pump your own gas, and at some stations they offer 100 octane unleaded race gas (for like 5 bux a gallon!!!)

Some states require it..."for safety.???"...NJ used to...found that out the hard way, with a guy yelling "get back in your car!!!" when I pulled up to the pump.

Weird.

I was about to say, with these gas prices, wtf were you doing getting full serve.. but, I didn't realize that Oregon was like NJ, where they don't let you pump your own gas..

Reminds of when I was in college, and all the dumb jersey girls would either sit in their car forever complaining about slow service, or would have no clue how to pump gas, like it was some kind of mystery. hehe.

I hope they offer due compensation, Shell is a big company, so they must have insurance for that. Hopefully, it's not too big a hassle.

That really sucks. So turbo car blow up that easily when running 87 instead of 91/93? O boy...

Anyway, as much as I'd like to see Shell "shell out some cash," good luck - they may have contributed to blowing your engine up, but your car isn't exactly street-legal - I'm thinking only a few states allow you to do whatever w/ your car (if any).

I guess your best bet would be to consult a lawyer about this? Most places do give a free consultation, and having a lawyer would better your chances of any compensation at all.

good luck

Very sorry to hear that. At least you pretty much have proof that your engine failure was a direct cause of them putting the wrong fuel in it. I hope you get what you deserve out of this ordeal. Once again, my condolences for your engine...

Well the funny thing is they aren't paying for it all. All yesterday was spent arguing, phone calls, making print outs, and using aggressive legal jargon. Today I find out if we go to court over the matter. The first 2 times they dismissed me as some punk kid and said that the lower octane couldn't cause the damage. So I spent all day gathering up my mechanic buddies in Eugene (who own business') and had them write out an explanation of why the octane rating is detrimental to MY specific car. I then delivered that to the station with a cover letter that said this was their last chance before they would be held liable for attorney fees. So now I am just waiting on them...

That sucks. Most gas stations here will let you pump it, but they have to stand next to you while you do it. Stupid, but good preventative measures can't be beat.

I used to love full service when I was in Mass. Sometimes pumping gets to be a PITA if your spoiled.

Best of luck getting a dime out of Shell. Most companies have a fleet of lawyers for this type of thing.

Eevrytime I've been to NJ (before and after I found out about the law) I've been telling the guy who TRIES to pump my gas to get the F away from my car and not touch it ever again. I have the right to NOT let them handle my car if I believe that they are not competent to do so, and no state law will take away my FEDERAL right to pump my own gas.

Actually, it's a privelidge, not a right. Just like driving. That'sa privelidge, not a right.

However, it IS a right to refuse someone access to your personal property. Let it be known, I'd never let those NJ gassers fill my car. But then again, I'd never be in NJ.

On another note:

If you're too stupid to safely pump gas, you should not own a car. NJ and Oregon are stupid for accomodating morons.

Just a though, let me play the devils advocate here

Why the gas station need to pay for a modified engine blowout?

What if you modified the engine after you pump the gas?

Now, for your relief, there is a small label on the gas door that says. High performance fuel only or smoehting like that.At least my car have this label. Nissan factory label.

The time frame I am working in is in my favor, this wasn't a break that happend over time but an almost instantaneous blow that can almost 100% be directly linked to THEIR gas and negligence. My mom used to work as secretary to legal attorney's in Anchorage AK so she uses all the jargon and talks to them. Anyways, I am in negotiations with their insurance as to the monetary award. Thank god I had a receipt and thank god I had a shop that can testify to the modifications of the engine.
