So I'm about to pull the trigger on a used Infiniti G most likely. I'm leaning toward a higher than avg mileage 09 G37X (have a tight budget) as opposed to the G35 as I prefer the higher gas mileage of the 7AT, more horsepower, and the better paint job. I'm finding very little complaints about issues with these cars almost to the conclusion on all my research that the 07-09 Infiniti models are more trouble free than Acura and maybe even Lexus (Toyota has not had a very good run lately in this dept.)

But I am hearing the 7AT getting on people's nerves. Can anyone expound on that. One complaint is the 7th gear isn't very useful because to do a quick pass you need to manually shift the car down two gears or shift to 6th to keep the car from bogging on an incline? I've heard other complaints that in slower traffic the car can have trouble staying in gear or choosing gears.

So what's the scoop and more importantly why hasn't Nissan just updated the shift program now that they've have a year or two to work out the kinks?

If you had the choice between an 08 G35X-S with 30K miles and an 09 G37X (non S) with 40K miles, for the same price, what would you choose?

7th gear is the second overdrive. It is actually just for highway cruising and economy. Any vehicle with a second overdrive gear will require a downshift for passing because of torque multiplication being minimal at low RPMs. Unless you're over 80, 7th or even 6th in many cars will require a downshift for accelerating smoothly. And yes, because 2nd is such a short gear, the car bounces from 3rd and 2nd in the 15 to 20mph range, but driving in sport mode can remedy that. I have a friend with the 7 speed transmission in a C350 that has the same complaint, so apparently its just a drawback of a slew of operational gears in a wide range of speed. Oh, and I'd take the G37 all day. Even Holidays.
