When I did my swap I did not see anything written about using the actuator solenoid, so I just made an extension and used it and mounted it in the stock place. Is the solenoid necessary? I was thinking about putting a manual boost controller in it's place.

that solenoid is for your ECU to control the boost. It is actually pretty fancy in that it can alter the way it opens and closes and provide you with either quick or slow boost. It also limits how much boost you are running if it sees something wrong.

You do not need it if you want to control the boost, which 99.9% of SR owners want to do.

Well, right now I have no type of boost controller, so Iguess I'll use it for the time being. I plan to either get the HKS actuator or get a manual boost controller.
