is this the upper valve guide?

is the metal plate with 2 12 inch bolts between the camshafts resting on the chain the upper valve guide? can i take it off and leave it off? mine is metal not plastic.

btw, how loose can the chain be? i pressed between the cams and i can push it down ~2 mm between the cams on the top

are you talking about the upper chain guide?

heres a pic of the timing chain guide...its right in between the cam gears and inline with the spark plug holes

Yes.

The other upper guide is metal and plastic, and is located on the drivers side of the head...but you have to pull the distributor and front upper cover to get to it.

And the chain slack is normal...the KA relies on oil pressure for the tensioner, so without the motor running and proper oil pressure, there will be slack.
