I think all it's saying is to spin it all the way to the right, then turn it 2.5 turns to the left, which should give you the negative/neutral position. Basically, position it in the middle of extreme left and extreme right. Don't force it left or right; stop when you feel resistance. You know, be ginger
if you keep spinning it one way and never feel it stop, yeah, it's snapped. It's basically just a 6' ribbon cable wound in a spiral inside the case. The solder points at either end of the cable are pretty fragile since the wire is so small, so even giving it a good tug at its limit will likely at least damage the solder points.
I've seen a few people repair them by replacing or resoldering the cable, but dunno if it's possible with ours.
