I messed with my throttle position sensor on the back of the throttle body because it wasnt exactly in specification. Now it is, but my car thinks I am touching the throttle (ultragauge says 22% throttle), so I am trying to do this reset procedure. But the steps are CRAZY!! Am I really reading that I have to key on for 5 seconds, then off for 10 seconds, TWENTY times??? I tried the test a few times, but my gauge still shows that the position isnt resetting.

Ive tried sitting in the car with a stop watch, and adding a few second to each key on and off, to make sure I wasnt doing one premature or something. But it isnt working.

12 RESET THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR IDLE POSITION MEMORY
Without CONSULT-II
NOTE:
Always warm up engine to normal operating temperature. If engine is cool, the throttle position sensor idle position
memory will not be reset correctly.
1. Remove feeler gauge.
2. Reconnect throttle position switch harness connector.
3. Start engine.
4. Warm up engine to normal operating temperature.
5. Stop engine. (Turn ignition switch “OFF”.)
6. Turn ignition switch “ON” and wait at least 5 seconds.
7. Turn ignition switch “OFF” and wait at least 10 seconds.
8. Repeat steps 6 and 7, 20 times.

This is on EC110 of the 2001.5 FSM

Is there any easier or more clear cut way to do the test?? Id love any help on this. Im screwed to get to work tomorrow :poke:

These cryptic procedures are irritating. Whoever came up with them is crazy. Are you certain that resetting the ECU doesn't reset the idle position memory? As far as I know, that procedure and use of CONSULT-II is the only way to achieve that procedure, unfortunately.

Im not sure if resettting the ecu resets the idle position memory. Should I disconnect the battery overnight and check??

Although this key on and off test takes 10 min of sitting in the drivers seat, it says it can be done without a consult II, so I dont get why it isnt doing it

I guess it's worth a try to reset the ECU.

Is the engine at operating temperature when you attempt this?

Yes the engine was 180+ just before all 3 attempts

Only way I know to reset the ecu is pull the negative cables for 12+ hours. Got a better way?

I did just pull the cables off though

I think generic scan tools can reset the ECU - just clear the codes even if you don't have any, if I recall correctly that resets the ECU.

Nope no dice. Still shows im on the throttle

Maybe Im confusing what they mean by key "off"

I turn it to on for the 5 seconds, and for the "OFF" I turn it all the way counterclockwise to "LOCK" in the ignition column. Maybe I dont have to turn it that far back? Maybe just back to acc or one before lock

The FSM isnt really clear, could it make a difference??

Technically, there is an unmarked position between LOCK and ACC that allows for movement of the steering wheel without the potential of locking it. It doesn't exactly provide as tactile a click as the other positions, but it's there. You can try using that I guess, but I'd imagine LOCK would work just as well since nothing new gets powered or unpowered between LOCK and the unmarked positions.

Ya I seen the unmarked one. I'll try and click back to just it. Maybe thats why none of these tests are working!!!
