This is perhaps the greatest news in the automotive world for me for this year. I am so stoked about this!

Given the car's iconic classic/futuristic status, it's no surprise that the DeLorean DMC-12 is a popular car for DIY electric car conversions. That an honest-to-goodness official DeLorean EV is coming from Humble, Texas' reborn DeLorean Motor Company itself, though? That we did not see coming. It makes sense, though. If you're gonna build a time machine electric car, why not do it with some style?

Announced Friday night at the DMC Texas Open House, DMC said it plans to work with electric car startup Epic EV to get an all-electric DMC-12 into production by 2013. Epic is the company started by Aptera co-founder Chris Anthony that is working on the Torq and Amp vehicles (and some rather clever videos). Early reports say the Electric DeLorean will have a maximum speed of 125 miles per hour and offer 260 horsepower for something like $90,000-100,000. The gullwing doors should remain, but we're not sure where the motor will go (the original DeLorean used a rear-mounted engine), let alone the battery pack. This isn't the first time a DeLorean with an alternative powertrain has been talked about. Before his death in 2005, John DeLorean hinted that a hydraulic hybrid drivetrain might find a home in a relaunched DMC-12. That never happened, of course.

Specific technical details on the upcoming DeLorean Electric are sparse, but we're pretty sure it will be able to recharge its 1.21 gigawatt-hour battery instantly when connected to the right power source. You know, until the inevitable Mr. Fusion model gets the green light.

Get out your lightning rods and Sony Walkmans, this is going to be fun to watch.

Anyone else like me in fully-geeked mode over this?!

Who doesn't love DeLoreans?!
I love that they are working with a company named "Flux" to make this thing come true.

I thought they were just BSing when I first read about it, I just expected some prototype POS, but then I read the review today and was pretty impressed. I actually didn't know until a few days ago that someone still owned and was doing something with the Delorean name. It has a 70 mi range as it is right now and it looks like they have plans to extend that considerably too, so this might actually become a viable option for an enthusiast... I know I'd much rather drive one of these than a Tesla Roadster

I think it's pretty cool, myself. If I were in the market for a two-door EV sports car, I'd consider one just for nostalgia's sake. I've always thought they were pretty cool looking cars.

There was a guy that lived down the street from a friend of mine in Del Mar, California. It was even his daily driver.

One can only hope.

I know if Mr. Fusion becomes an option, it will change the world of electric cars as we know it. :gapteeth:

That is pure awesome win. I especially like that they didn't try to hide anything "unsightly" and actually made good use of exposing batteries and the working dodads and gear.

Not sure why they designed it to go all the way to 125mph.

It's not like they're actually fabricating anything new for the chassis tho, afaik these guys simply bought the rest of the manufacturing stock leftover from the factory at the time John Delorean allegedly was selling coke to pay for the failed company...

Nothing wrong with that, in fact it's pretty smart. That's what RUF does with Porsche bodies.

Yeah dude it's the new "in" thing. Apparently it helps overcome the whole "downturned economy" issue.

That's pretty cool. I actually saw a time machine-laden DeLorean just last weekend. Complete with Mr Fusion. Made my day.

Well, the DMC12 is a Hell of a light lighter than all the modern EVs being made right now. Maybe it'll actually have a decent range.
