My "Malfunction indicator light" just popped up. Is this something I need to get checked out? My manual says it may indicate an emission control problem. Could it be my exhaust?

ECU is located in the right side passanger's kick panel.

Pull it out (2 or 3 bolts (10mm) IIRC).

Find the screw on the ECU (flat head screw), should be on the side.

Turn ignition to ON position

Now, turn the screw clockwise until it stops (DO NOT FORCE IT!), it should be circa ~ 1.5 rotations.

Count to 5

Turn screw back to original position.

The MIL (Check Engine Light) should be flashing.

Here's how you read the code. - Count the number of LONG flashes - Count the number of following SHORT flashes- MIL will pause, it will then repeat the 1st code or give you another diagnostic code.

The LONG flashes give you the first two digitsThe SHORT flashes give you the second two digits

1 Long and 3 short would equate to a P0103 error code3 Long and 4 short would equate to a P0304 error code

Post what comes up and we will be able to tell you exactly whats going on with the MIL.

So I have no hope if the screw is rusted?

You could try making it move. You can spray a very minor amount of rust penetrant onto the screw. Keep in mind your doing this into your ECU and it is electronic.

The actual part where to put the screwdriver into is all warped. you cant even really tell its a screw unless you were looking for one

goto your local autozone or kragen/shucks and see if they will pull the codes for you with a scan tool. or hit the nissan dealer and tell them all you wanna know is what codes are stored in your computer but you do not want any diagnosis. they may just do it for free or at least only hit you for a half hour of labor. if your computer has rust in it that is not a good thing. that means you have had a serious amount of water INSIDE your car.

water + ecm = bad news

Well my car is used. Ive had it almost 10 months and nothing has really gone wrong. I think it's just the new exhaust I got put on. But this thing popped up like 2 weeks after it was installed so who knows.

well see if you can get the codes pulled. the exhuast information leads me to believe you may have a code 32 egr system. you may not have enough back pressure for your egr to operate.

this might be stupid, but i wonder if like a higher or different amount of octane going through his new exhaust has something to do with it? I've heard of people frying the o2 sensor by upping the octane..just a thought.

frying o2 sensor with octane? not likely. maybe with aftermarket fuel additives or treatments.
