I made a topic about a wierd noise my car was making, after further research I have come across similar sounding videos with people cars who suffer from rod knock. Could someone help me with this? I have been trying to figure it out all day and dont know what to do.

Video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=CH2aYaFkDBs

Once the engine was swapped, it started up fine.. I drove it through the neighborhood and then parked it and let it idle and it started to do this. Is my engine on its last leg?

Thanks

Crap that sounds bad. It is for sure not noisy lifters because it doesn't have the right frequency or light tick. Just to be sure, take your valve covers off to see if anything is obviously out of whack or bouncing around inside the head. I don't think you'll be that lucky though. Sorry man

Ahh, that would be my worst case scenario there. I did the water pump replacement by myself and I am sure I did not mess with anything timing wise.. Man this sucks, the engine sounded just fine the other day, prior to me taking it for a slow drive. Here is the video of before (bypassed turbo):

http://youtube.com/watch?v=el0aIvllmN8

Skip about 4 minutes into the video to actually hear it start..

I had my neighbor who is very proficient in anything involving mechanics come check it out, he said the engine was fine, just sounded like something rattled loose under the timing cover. I would really hope for that to be the case.. just not getting my hopes to high. I will be pulling the cover off as soon as I get a chance

While that is a refreshing comment to hear, I currently do not have my electric fan hooked up. I am holding on to the hope that it is something simple like that though. I wish I knew what it was, not knowing sucks..

the noise sounds too rapid and high pitched to be internal. something is probably loose. if it sounded good before, then probably something has loosened and the belt skipped. how are you sure you didn't mess with the timing? doesnt the water pump sit behind the timing belt?

oh.. and what was that spark when you started it?

Your timing belt sounds like it's wayy to tight

Seriously? I could see myself making that mistake. Would it make a noise like that? If so, what exactly is happening that makes that noise? Thanks!

I really hope that is whats going on.

Edit- Just researched what happens when a timing belt is too tight, can wear out the bearings, causing them to make noise. This looks hopeful

I did the same thing on my first rb26, ran the belt into the back on the block had half a belt left when i took the cover off, also i have seen people overtighten water pump belts front overtighten`n the alternator and if you overkill it somtimes the blades on the pump will nick the housing, but check that belt first,

BEst of luck man

Thanks for the reply, I will definately check out the alternator belt. That makes sense if the fins of the water pump are ticking against the housing. When I installed the water pump I may have over torqued the bolts holding it to the engine.. would that cause any issues?

Thank you so much. I owe you dinner sometime. While this was not the direct cause for the noise, it did lead me right to it. I loosend the alternator belt, no noise, inspected a little closer and saw the stupid mistake on my part..

Problem: The water pump pulley was loose, 2 of the 4 nuts on the pulley were almost all the way backed off, the other 2 were only hand tight. I took the pulley off numerous times and guess I just forgot to tighten it the last time. So the noise was either the washers rattling back and forth or the pulley itself moving around. Sounds just fine now that i have tightend it. I feel pretty stupid but its ok, learning experience. Here is a picture:

I should have made a comment on that. I am using a jumper pack to start the car as the battery is just about dead. The alligator clamp on the positive post shook a bit when the car went to start causing the spark, no worries!

lmao, man i read your post, and i before i even read this thread and after i saw the video i was like...

WATER PUMP PULLEY AND BELT. I did the exact same thing a a year or so ago. One of the pulley bolts had come loose just like yours.

Except mine made a horrible rod knocking sound. I was scared as crap, and then fixed that and it was smooth as glass.
