Is this referred to as steering gear? If so how hard is it to replace? Some how the steering column came off and the part that is connects to looks stripped.

Any ideas where I can source a replacement?

thats the input to your rack and pinion, which is technically your gear box. easy to find. try a parts store.

I looked it up at autozone and noticed there two different Rack & Pinion. There's Rack & Pinion and theirs Rack & Pinion (Short Unit). Which one would I need?

I think he wants to replace just the input shaft, which isn't possible. The rack is sold as a unit. I would personally opt for either a junkyard rack or a new OEM rack. I've had bad luck in the past with units from autozone/advance.

As far as the short versus non-short, my only guess is that they sell one with and without the tie rods like Jon said.
