Guys, I'm in negotiations to buy this engine which is being advertised as an RB25DET. These are the only photos I have and I don't have access to any more. Is it possible to differentiate it from the RB20DET using only these photos?

Thanks in advance!-kouki

...that CAS looks different than mine...?

I believe RB20's have "RB20" printed on the timing belt/cam gear cover.

Looks like a 25 from what I can tell.

not all rb20 have the "rb20" printed on the cover.

if you notice there an extra hump on the cover next to the cas-- that new design is only come on R33 and newer RB motors. the R32 RB motors are flat on that spot. so, i have to say it's an RB25.

yes, that would be for the VVT. the rb20 never came with VVT.

That's an RB25... you can tell by the hump on the timing cover and the fact that the manifold has the raised area for the greddy logo. I would also assume its a series I, since the cas looks different than mine.

Thanks for the input guys! Here's the deal: I'm buying this as part of a complete motor set with the usual transmission, ecu, uncut harness, MAF, etc and 30 day start up guarantee for $2600. Supposedly the motor has only 30-40,000 miles but I've been around long enought to realize that that's likely BS. Anyway, the deal does not include the Greddy intake (he wants $1200 for it!!!) or the polished valve cover. The motor will be returned to stock for me at no charge. I'm also buying an R33 crossmember from the same guy for $200 (seems like too much but I don't know where else to get it....believe me, I looked).

Any thoughts?-kouki

1200 for a greddy manifold? lol You can get them new for 700. Is this guy local? I would check everything out first if I were you.

modified engine? that's someone elses' toy, you don't know what they did to it or how they may have abused it.....

ask him at least to do some compression/leak down test first... also take detailed photos of the cam so you can inspect the wear thus gauging the health of the motor

milage don't matter much if these things check out

Yeah, I know that it's possible to get a brand new Greddy manifold for almost half the amount he's asking. Unfortunately, the engine is not local and I have no way of examining it myself. This seller was recommended to me by a bunch of folks both from 240sx.org and 240sxforums.com. The company is called JDM Engines out of South Florida and the guy's name is Edmund Mahabir. With respect to the prior history of the motor, I'm told that it was never modified and never abused and that it came out of a running/driveable R33 that he personally drove in Japan. The motor was put on the engine stand in the show room of a nearby tuning shop to show it off, that's why it has the polished parts. I will be performing the swap down in Florida in the middle of next month so if there are problems, don't think I won't be on his *** to make things right
