I only have had my J30 for a few days, but I have noticed when the engine first rev to about 3K RPM (the speed is about 20-25mph), it would suddenly goes down to about 2200 RPM and then goes back up again to around 2.5 - 2.8K RPM and stay there.I don't drive my car hard as I haven't got time to flash all the fluids yet. Is this normal or it is something I should have a tech look into it?

Thanks for your help,

David

Is it dependend wether u r on the gas or not? Some rpm variation is normal (stall speed).

Say if you are on the hiway and go off the gas it drops a bit and when u got back on, rpms goes up until u accelerate again? That is normal, anything beyond that is not.

This happen mostly when I drive locally and just start the car after a complete stop (after a red light). My foot is on the gas the whole time, it will goes to 3k then come down to 2k or so then goes back again. (I feel a slight speed drop too)

Thanks,

David

Do the revs drop when you release the gas or also when you keep holding it down?

First, Fred, thank you for taking the time to answer my question.

I just drove back from work. I feel the rev drops about 600 rpm whenever the car changes gears.

For example, when going from 0 to 70, my car drops rev twice. Once when I was at around 25-30 MPH and rev 2800 rpm, it drops down to 2200 rpm and then goes back. It drops again at around 55 MPH and rev 3400 rpm to 2800 rpm then goes steady back to 3100 rpm until the car goes to 70 MPH. I have my foot holding down the gas all the time when this happened. Each time it drops rev, I feel a slight pause in speed like the car want to stop then it gains speed again.

If I maintain my speed at a constant speed, there is no rev changes. It only happens when I try to speed up the car at certain intervals.

So the revs drop under acceleration as you downshift?(when they should be rising)OR Do they drop under gentle accel as sign of an upshift as you gain speed?

(Sorry for all the questions, just wanna make sure we excatly understand symptoms, kinda hard when u are not driving it)

Hi, Fred. I understand what you mean and I approciate you taking the time to help me. :)

My J30 has auto trans, so I am not doing any downshifting? or can the auto doing downshifting when I hit the gas?

Anyway, I am trying to accel by hitting the gas padel. the engine would revs to about 2500 rpm and then a sudden drop of revs would occur before it start to revs upwards again.

So I would say it is more like they drop under gentle accel as sign of an upshift as I gain speed?

Has I answered your question? I am a complete newbie when it comes to cars.:oface

1)Yes, in an auto transmission if you mash the pedal down hard enough, the transmission will actually downshift into a lower gear resulting in higher revs (for the time being that is, until later it will upshift lowering revs again)

2)During gentle acceleration as your speed increases the rpms will rise to the point where the "transmission computer" decides you need to be one gear higher. Then it will upshift into a higher gear causing your rpms to drop to a lower level and then slowly rise if you keep accelerating.

The above is normal (is that what you are experiencing?)

Thank you Fred. :) I guess what I am experience is the second one you described. As I have said, I haven't really drive the car hard yet.

Since I bought this car from someone else, and I have heard the transmission will adapt to the style of the owner, is there anyway I can change it?

Once again, I really approciate your help, Fred, and I am hoping to enjoy this car for years, and coming to this forum often. :)

Transmission performs as programmed given sensor inputs. It is not trainable.

Maxnix is right this is not a learning transmission, but u can always get a transmission flsuh with <subsequent> (not before) pan drop filter change.Refill w/ MOBIL1 ATF or similiar premium ATF.The syn ATF will give u firmer shifts in some driving situations. It is possible (but very expensive) to redrill your valve bodies for different shifting (change stall speed/shift points).

My J shifts a little hard for 1st to 2nd right after the car is started until the engine warms up. I think a lot of people have this problem...maybe becuase my car is 10 years old.

People who warm their cars before driving them well may not have this problem.
