So I was gonna get some quotes on doing a custom exhaust and I went to this one store who had a pretty good rep in the area. This guy only quoted me for an axle back exhaust (magnaflow series) and I told him that I was looking for catback. He said "if you're looking just to have louder sound, then go with catback, but the axle back will provide a deeper note and will still increase air flow." THe reason why it wouldnt be necessary is because the stock exhaust is already 2.25'' and 2.5 would just make it sound loud which I tried telling him that it would also create more airflow. Not to mention a nice quote of $450 installed just for axle back. I was expecting $300-ish quotes for a FULL Catback exhaust.

If anyone from the LA area knows of any good exhaust shops please let me know because all google is giving me is just exhaust repair shops.

450$ seems a little steep. I paid 350$ for a custom flowmaster cat-back from 2.25 to 3". unfortunately i live in jersey so i cant help you out with a shop, but i might be able to post a picture of my receipt and you can take it and shove it in his face. good luck!

I thought 3'' would create back pressure. Or does it not matter if its the axle back?

you have a 2.5? wouldn't it be pretty much stock sounding without a cat-back? the 2.5 has a factory resonator in the cat-back section. I know Nissan Maximas have resonators that kill almost all the sound, so I'd expect the 2.5s to have a similar one. As far as performance goes, I'd think that not having that resonator would give power since it restricts the sound a lot, but I'm no expert and could be wrong.

I paid $160 for a magnaflow axel back without tips, $100 for the cat-back section.... with tips, it should be around $250 for an axel back.

also, did you by any chance call one of those exhaust repair shops? my local shop comes up as repairs and also performance exhaust in google.

If someones exhaust is damaged, they'd need a new muffler or maybe some new piping and if a shop can install mufflers and bend and weld piping, I don't see why they couldn't install a custom exhaust... It's worth a try to look into it, maybe you could save some money.

good luck! :bigthumb:

I paid 170 for a custom 2.5 to magnaflow, to a custom y pipe to have dual tips to look like stock for my 240sx.
But that is a single pipe. Have him price it out. What kind of pipe are you getting SS, aluminum? muffler> anything special done? Labor cost?
call up a couple shops, it doesn't sound like you want anything fancy so they should be able to give you a rough quote

Well guys...

Luck came my way. I never thought I'd find this on a craigslist, but I think eventually I was bound to stumble upon something. In about an hour I'm going to pick up a fairly new Nismo Catback Exhaust. Now, I WOULD HAVE preferred a Stillen if I were to go with a brand name, but Nismo does have a pretty nice tone to it. Not to loud, not that stock. Plus for the price I'm getting with a little negotiating, how could I pass this up? Lets just say for what this mechanic quoted me, this is far much cheaper and its the real deal, no knock off. I hope I'm not pressing my luck here. SO WISH ME LUCK! ;)

Yo where in Jersey? and did you ask for the 3" yourself or they knew what they were doing? I have a magnaflow axel back and was thinking about getting a straight pipe.

I asked for it, but they knew what they were doing. It was Link's Mufflers in Haledon. He's really fair with prices and goes out of his way for customers.

So since this is a used exhaust, would it make sense to clean the insides of the piping of all the dark soot?

The larger the exhaust diameter the less the pressure, while this seems like a good thing (going to a much larger diameter) it really isnt. If you go to large you will actually lose power. For a 2.5 I'd recomend 2.25", maybe 2.75 boosted. For a 3.5 3" is too much unless boosted as well, i wouldnt go larger then 2.75". The determining factor for best diameter is the hp the engine puts out, thats how you decide the best diameter for what you want :) !

I wasn't asking how to clean the tips, I'm asking how to clean the out the actual pipes of the cat back.

If you want to clean the outside of the pipe (if i get u right) the steel wool and maybe a lil soap might do it. otherwise using a metal polish compound will do it.

There isnt really a way to clean the inside, why do you want to clean the inside??? Are you talking about cleaning the inside of the welds of the pipe????
