Hey guys I just bought this diff off a scrap yard for 300 CDN.

It came out of a 96 240sx With ABS and 65 K Kilometers on the car.

I am just unsure whether or not it is LSD or a Open Diff.

Here are some pics.

Ummm, Well my 95 240sx does not have a VLSD its actually open. I believe that was an option . Either open or VLSD , or if you got ABS i believe all ABS 240sx had VLSD

well, i didn't mean all diffs were viscous. i mean that the cars equipped with LSDs got viscous units.

also, redline is my preffered choice gear oil.

and yes, that's a viscous unit.

Just for reassurance couldn't you find out by spinning the output shafts?? Correct me if I'm wrong... I know that it works if it is installed, but I'm not sure if it would have the same affect being completely removed.

Going by the FSM, the Viscous unit is sealed and you don't use LSD additive. Also you can see where the spider gears are that its a viscous Diff. To tell by spiining the ouput shafts if you spin one the other should spin the smae way, and if you hold both and try to spin them in oppisate directions its either very hard or it wont.

the viscous unit has a breakaway of 70 lb/ft i think. Very hard to make them spin at seperate speeds by hand.

and i think the rumor was started, or at least perpetuated by SCC

Well hey, you don't have to worry if you did buy another open centre.. just weld the bastard, and you'll be fine if you ever get bored of having a locker, then you can just put your open centre back in..

so many ways of having fun under the sun

When I got my old one, I could spin them with my hands, and it still locked up fine when the fluid warmed up.

Good find on the low mileage VLSD. I use regular 80/90 and it works well.
