Is this annoying noise coming from transmission or flywheel or what??

Discuss the RB20, RB25 and RB26 series engines.

I have an rb20det and it has always had an annoying noise coming from the transmission/flywheel area. Even with a brand new stage 2 clutch/pressure plate and throw out bearing (that thing the FORK pushes on??).

It is a whirrrrring noise as though something is spinning. I would say that is a guarantee that it is something spinning because when I push in the clutch it does away (sometimes only slightly) for a few seconds. However, when I ease the shift knob towards first gear, the sound slows down and stops right when the knob is about to pop into first gear.

It is so annoying to hear my engine idling so quietly at 1000 rpm, but something is making that annoying whirrrrrrrrrrrrring. I can barely even stand to crank it up to show it off because of the sound.

Any suggestions??

What flywheel are you running? If its aluminum then you are probably experiencing what is called gear noise. Nothing you can do to quiet any of that unless you go to stock or Steel wheel.

Sounds like a worn bearing. If you depress the clutch and sound goes away, its your throw out bearing. if the sound is their while driving and increases with RPM, its the transmission bearings.

stock flywheel. new throwout bearing like 25 miles ago with the new clutch. That is all the mileage I've put on it since I put the motor and trans back together and put them in the truck.

The sound goes away a little when I push in the clutch, but completely stops when I push the shifter towards a gear....it's like it applies pressure to a spinning part and stops it from spinning....thereby, no spinning = no "whirring" sound.

Not much I'm going to do about it now. I am not gonna pull the trans to fix it unless something goes out.

mine does the same, tore trans down and inspected everything- looked good. You probably have small pitting in input shaft bearing in trans. Trans was probably sitting for long time. I spun all bearings in mine while apart and felt good and still get minor noise. I wouldn't worry about it.

If you push in the clutch and the noise goes away, then it is NOT your TOB. I dont know where anyone gets this idea. If your TOB is failing, it will make noise when it is under load, which is when the clutch pedal is depressed.

You're experiencing an internal transmission bearring noise. There's a few bearrings that are constantly spinning when the transmission is in neutral, that stop spinning when you push in the clutch, and the input shaft is dissengauged from engine rpm.

Deal with it or tear the trans apart and replace the bearrings. Mine kept getting worse until 1st gear was impossible to select while moving at any speed.

My trans needs bearings and does something similar to what you describe. If it makes you feel better, its been like this for over 4 years now.

I took it out for another test drive today and noticed that it makes annoying noise, RPM dependant, while driving too.

I'm pretty sure mine has always done all this back when it was in the 240, but I realllly notice it inside the truck now especially since I have an open hole between my right hand and the transmission...lol I haven't bolted in the plate and shiftboot yet. I still see my driveshaft yoke and the pavement from inside the truck...hehe pretty good way to get Carbon Monox. poisoning I bet....

I hate these trannies...Never had a well made motor with a transmission that is so sensative. Mine makes a similar noise. When I 1st crank it up its fine. i press in the clucth pedal and all is good. When I even out the clucth to move forward I hear a noise that sounds like the clucth release bearing may be something in the transmission. It goes away after driving it for like 3 minutes. As soon as my transmission go out im swaping it for a th350/th400 trans..Shoot I might swap it out while its still good...lol

This transmission stuff makes me want to get anouther engine/transmission combo...

mine sounds alot better now. It was a little low on trans fluid so I dumped it all and filled it up with better trans fluid.

mine makes the noise too.

it is especially noticeable in a high gear where I am going low speed and low RPMs (which I shouldn't do anyway, but hey...)
