I'm ordering parts from Joe Tuesday or Wednesday of next week to start on my Q project, here's what I'm getting:

1 Left-Front Tie-Rod End2 O2 Sensors2 Knock Sensors1 Knock Sensor Wiring Harness1 Cooling Fan Clutch1 Cooling Fan Blade1 Thermostat1 Throttle Body Gasket1 EGR Tube1 EGR Valve Gasket8 OEM Spark Plugs

Is there anything else I should consider replacing while all this is being done? Thanks,

Nick

Without getting into my records, I can see that you'll need the 8 rubber plenum gaskets and the IAC gasket for when you remove the plenum to do the knock sensors. What about the under-plenum hoses? Why are you ordering an EGR tube? It's metal; unless it's damaged it can easily be removed and soaked/scrubbed till spotless. If you're replacing your thermostat you will probably need to replace your lower radiator hose, and you may as well do the upper one too. Together they're maybe $20-25. Have you ohmed all 8 injectors? If you plan to remove the runners, you may need to replace the metal gaskets under them. Besides replacing what's listed, what do you hope to achieve?

I'd replace the tie rod ends as a pair... they're not that expensive, and since you're going to need an alignment anyway, it's proably time. Replace the rack boots at the same time... you have to pull the tie rod ends to replace them, and they're relatively cheap too.

If you're replacing the t-stat, I'd recommend the hose that leaves the t-stat cover. I had to cut mine to get it off and then improvise with an AutoZone replacement since it was a Sunday afternoon. If it's never been done before replacing the metal tube that connects the T-Stat hose and lower radiator hose, and the t-stat cover may be a good idea. They are sacrifical annodes and are typically badly corroded.

I'd replace every hose under the plenum... you'll definately need three hoses under the valley - I had to cut those and remove their housings to replace my knock sensors.

As far as suspension... I'd think about rack bushings, but you can really get into some $$ with a complete overhaul, so you might hold off on that...

Just curious, what happened to your EGR tube?

Thanks for the replies guys.

I was thinking about replacing the EGR tube but like you said, if i can just remove and clean I'll save myself the money. But if I remove it, I should replace the valve gasket right?

I will replace the upper and lower radiator hoses as recommended by Robert. Heath, if I replace these is there something else I need to replace or is one of these that tube going out of the T-stat. I will replace the T-stat housing. Do I need the upper AND lower housing replaced? Just curious.

Thanks for the advice on the gaskets. I'll definitely do those. The hoses under the plenum were replaced last year. Do you think they need to be done again? I was thinking about just replacing the water and air hoses. Let me know what you think.

I'll replace the tie-rod ends as a pair except I'm gonna hold off on the rack boots. This fall I have a MAJOR suspension project planned (upper links, tension rods, fstb, front stablizer bar and bushings and links, active rear sway bar, etc etc).

Thanks for the advice so far,

nick

p.s. Robert, what I hope to gain with all this is performance, longevity and better fuel economy.

My $.02:

If you are changing the thermostate, also look for corrosion in the the housing as well as the tube connecting to lower rad hose - both serve as cathodic (sp?) protection for your cooling system. Also, how are your coolent hoses? I understand they wear from the inside out. I think, for a small $$, you can replace the hoses crossing the top of the engine block.

The plenum hoses are probably fine. I think after 2 years I wouldn't have a problem with my hoses, based on how they look and feel. The lower radiator hose goes to the t-stat cover. Yes, replace the EGR gasket. Too bad you have to do the plenum so soon, but it sounds like things will be in good shape when you're done.

I don't think an alignment would be necesary for any of those things - but if you're replacing rack boots, you'll have to go back and realign the tie rods after you put them back together...for about $10 each, I'd go ahead and do them now. Of course if you've replaced them recently then you probably don't need to again...

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all your input. I was thinking I should probably just give you an idea of exactly what was done last summer so you can make judgments based on that also:

Well the Q was in terrible shape, my brother drove it second semester while I was away at college and freakin ruined it. When I got home the car took about 30 seconds to accelerate to 25 mph, the rear end was whining and clicking, etc etc. So I took it to my mechanic Curtis and here's what he did:

He said there was carbon everywhere in those intake valves so what he had to do was basically crawl in the engine and spray carbon cleaner inside the intake valves everyday and let it soak all day. He did this until the engine was firing on all cylinders again. He also replaced the two injectors under the plenum. While doing all this he resealed the valve covers, cleaned the throttle body, and replaced every hose under the plenum.

As far as the rear end went, it needed a new one so he found a used one for 400 bucks and I helped him overhaul it to put it in the car.

Curtis is who I will be using for all my mechanical work because I am not very mechanically inept. Also, you have to realize that Curtis has been working on my baby since our extended Infiniti warranty (100k) went out. He is awesome!!

Thanks again for the help,

Nick

P.S. Resolution to my brother's idiocracy? I bought the car from my parents. It is officially and legally MINE. Muhahhaa.

Ok, I'll replace the tie-rod ends as a pair along with the rack boots. I can't find a part listed for the metal tube connecting the lower radiator hose and thermostat. I'm replacing the upper and lower radiator hoses and the thermostat and thermostat housing. Should this include this metal tube?

Also, on Joe's site it lists under fan shroud a lower shroud, an upper shroud and a complete shroud. Are these all 3 necessary to order or should I just order upper and lower or should I just order complete? Thanks,

nick
