Newbie here. I'm considering building a 510 with a SR20DET as seen on several websites with very cool 510s! Can you tell if this engine is a S14 or S15? Thanks!

s15...that slant in the rear of the valve cover is the easiest designation...please read the top of the forum before buying anything from ebay....and check out ebays policy reguarding how much you can be reimbursed if ripped off...

Not by looking at the picture from that far away really, though I just saw this S15 on ebay. Sounded like a crappy deal.

S14 has the VTC (variable timing control) also and thus has the slanted valve cover (if we're talking about the same thing). Neither the 180sx/S13 blacktop or redtop have the slanted valve cover. My S14 SR has a slanted valve cover. - I can guarantee it came from a S14 because I bought the front clip.

I'm really not sure how to tell a S14 from S15 engine from the type of picture you're showing.

The S14 does NOT have a 'slanted' valve cover in the back....the S14's and S15's do have VTC which is visually noticable by the 'Lobe' on the front of the valve cover, and head...(the circle shapped lobe you see when looking at the front of the motor).....both S13's and S14's have 'flat' valve covers....There are some other ways to denote the S15, but its the only one with that slanted valve cover, so its easily noticable.

The S14 engine DOES have a slanted valve cover in back. If you wanna see them go to heavy throttle they have about 5 pics over there. I am also looking at the engine in the S14 SR20DET service manual and that sure looks like a hump to me. The 180SX has a flat valve cover. I am currently looking for a new spark plug cover and can only use the Redtop or 180SX blacktop cover since the S14 and S15 SR have humps over the third cylander.

I have a S14 SR20DET in a 95 240sx....

YES it has vtc and the slanted valve cover........

The best way to find out what exactly you have is to get the engine plate number which is between the firewall and the engine itself. Someone can decode that to tell you whether its S14 or S15....

You can send it to me, i can decode it since i have the S14 FSM(SR and yes in english). Email at [email protected]

Hope that clarifies the confusion

maybe pics like this throw me off?

and point out the "slanted valve cover"

Now for an s15....

also minor, and not sure, but the S15 has those ridges on the front of the head, like the s13 blacktop, the pics of s14's i have seen dont have those ridges...but i dont know if thats the case on all of them...maybe one of you s14 guys can check that out.

I have never seeen a s14 in person , and havent compared them side by side...guess hte intake runners are slightly different, but not noticable....pop out the injectors, and check, or ask what injectors the motor comes with, that will help you differentiate...

Well, I think the pics are throwing you off. In the first, the polish makes it difficult to see and in the second, the STB blocks view.

Heres a pic I pulled off another site:

Here is the original from this post:

They look pretty similar to me

Furthermore I have a S14 SR - it has the slant - runs on S14 SR ECU. Do you think I don't know what's in my own engine bay?Trust me on this one. I bought the front clip, and I can guarantee you that the clip I bought did not have a S15 SR in it.

We ought to let this rest and when you actually do see one in person, then you'll agree.

Not really hostility - just trying to help with the learning process.

I like that color, blood has a nice appeal on a SR20.
