Is this a leaky trans or engine (pics)

these pics are of a salvage yard, 93, manual transmission. I wiped the inside a couple of times with a paper towel... icky, gooy mess... does this look like the previous owner had an oil leak from the engine or front seals on the trans need replacing?

Was it sitting outside detached from the engine? It looks like some rust mixed with the dust from a clutch.

when I found it, it was stored indoors on a rack, no telling where it was or for how long previous to that. does this look like a problem trans or typical of the age

if the oily stuff stinks, it's gear oil and it's the transmission. I'm more than willing to be though, that it's from the rear crank seal...
