Took 1997 J30t for alignment, Firestone said my rear brakes needed replacing. Says

Right Rear Break "RR" is 85% worn, and that the caliper was allowing that bad to grind away on the wheel? Something like that. The other brakes they listed as being 50% worn.

They want me to buy "R LT CALIPER" $175x2 "R PREM NON ASB PADS $139 "R DISC BRAKE ROTOR $146x2 LIFE TIME REAR DISCBRAKEJOB (Labor) $120

BRAKE SYSTEM FLUSH/FLUID/LABOR/BLEED ABS: $92

Total est. $994

I asked what will happen if i dont repair it, they said that the rear brakes would stop working, and eventually "it will lock up on you"

Fair price?

Why not just replace the pads yourself ???

Sounds to me like they are gouging you BIG time.Rotor and caliper should be fine.

I dont know how to replace the pad, and they said the pad would wear down again because the 'hydraulics' were bad on it

The "hydraulics" would just be the caliper, and the pads should be the easiest thing to change besides the rotor. Just slide them out when you take the caliper off.

Saw ..Sounds like you dont work on cars much.If you have a friend that does maybe he or she can help you out.It really is quite simple if you know the procedure.Pads should cost you 20 bucks give or take.

Get yourself some OEM nissan brake rotors or highend aftermarket. The J is a heavy car, most generic aftermarket rotors warp very easily. No chain warrantees rotor warp. Check the fine print.

Brembo or centric rotors are less then $50 each and pads start at $20 at rockauto.com they also have rebuilt calipers under $50 each.

Download the service manual here http://www.phatg20.net/compone...d,11/

I say if the pads haven't worn the rotors out don't get new rotors at all.

No, not a fair price. I bought the expensive pads this last week and they were $42 after tax. I doubt your calipers are bad. The bolts that hold them on need to be re-greased.

It took me about 30 minutes to change the pads and most of that was jacking the car up and getting the wheels off.

Buy a set of pads, and find a good friend or mechanic that you TRUST to put them on. Offer your friend some money, food, etc of your choice for his help. I would probably do that kind of job (including flushing the fluid) for like $50 for a friend.

rip off alert!

For that price you can get all parts for all 4 brakes.

If you don't know how to do it, provide with your own parts and ask a shop to put them on for you.

Yea, thats not fair at all. I just replaced all my brakes at all four corners for less than $300... and that was with ceramic pads!! Doing the work myself of course. Brake jobs aren't much harder than changing a tire, I would definitely do it myself, or like a few others said, find a friend who can help.

The caliper probably isn't shot, the slider pin probably just needs to be lubed.. I can't say that for sure without looking at it of course, but thats definitely worth looking into. These calipers seem to have a faulty design and let a LOT of water into the slider pins, causing them to rust and seize pretty good. I had 5 that were completely siezed on my car and my pads wore funny, making me think I needed 3 new calipers at first, then I looked at the pins and saw how rusty they were. I sanded them up and dipped each one in never-sieze (that silver stuff) and they all work perfectly now.

Once you get the tires off there is only 2 more bolts to remove. the ones that that mount the front calipers then you just lift the caliper out of the way and the rotor pulls right off,

The backs are the same but inside the hub is the emergency brake similar to a drum brake.

Did you download the manual

Thanks for everyone's help. I did download the manual, but i've never gotten a car lifted up, or removed the tires. Dont know how to even do that. And I have no tools

Is it really ok if I just order Brembo Rotors and pads?

In that case definitely have the work done for you, but find a shop you feel comfortable at that specializes in Japaneses autos. There are several good ones here so ask around your area. You will get quality workmanship and parts, at the dealership but for a high price. If you can afford it definitely go to a dealership, keep in mind if the brake system is that bad what are the rest of the mechanical systems like. It sounds like the car was poorly maintained, which means there are some more high dollar jobs in the horizon. Most of the folks here do their own work and will only use Nissan parts. You will get the best price on parts from Infiniti of Scottsdale and could save a little if you bring your own parts to the shop. Ask the shop first if they will take a job with you bringing the parts, most make a good percentage of their profit on part mark up.

About the last question my J30 boys:

I found a deal at irotors -- are they good brakes? Total cost with shipping for all four rotors & pads = $296

http://www.irotors.com/storefr...78566

Or I found centric rotors & 4 pads at rockauto for a total $382

Bear in mind my j30 is sort of beat up, but not too bad, and I have limited finances. At the same time, death by bad brakes is bad

Are the centric's worth the extra money?

I have read good things about the centrics and brembos I still have OEM on both Js one was within .4mm of replacement the last time I had them turned. (26.4MM)

This place has rotors and pads for 100 cheaper then you quoted above http://stores.brakeplanet.com/...0Pads

You can buy rotors at Napa or most autoparts stores for as low as $38 to $45 each, and brake pads as low as $28 a set. Turning rotors usually costs $10 to $15 each if they still are thick enough. Check Rock Auto, they are even cheaper, and often have closeout parts really cheap. Some Mexican guy just did my front for $25 labor, I had to pay the $45 for the Bendix D587 ceramic pads and $10 each for turning the rotors. I watched how he did it and will do the rears myself, seems easy if you can watch someone do it the first time. So my total cost for new pads and turned rotors for the front, labor, and tax was $94.16.
And yes, the brake pad housing slide on two rods that have to be greased, if they get dry and rust the mechanism will bind up. There is a black rubber boot on the end you can take off and pull the rod to grease it.

Since the J is a heavy car, get yourself some quality rotors. Either OEM or high end aftermarket. Low end aftermarket ones don't last. You'll be changing them out within months.
