Is this a blown head gasket or what else could it be?

I'm possibly buying this mint 180sx with 88000kms but he said that he did a compression test and one of the cylinders is out and it blows white smoke out the exhaust. So i know this is a sign of a head gasket but could it be something more serious or less serious.

I'm just wanting to knnow what i'm getting into cause it's pretty cheap.

Thanks, Tyler

Is the chassis worth it?I would decide at this point if I was looking for a car to build or drive off the bat. If you get that car, I mean, guaranteed rebuild and write in the cost of building a good motor. Or, get yourself another one that IS running and reliable so you can drive it.

I know how I work, I bought a running rb20 hatch a few months back and was about 90 percent done with my ca18det coupe. Now I have a massively upgraded rb20 powered coupe and a very stock ca18 hatch and neither one is running because I am poor. I will note though, both cars f'ing rock when they do go...

Well it's a pretty cheap trade for a mint chassis with 88000kms on it. only like $3000 and he says it still runs just under boosts and blows out white smoke with no compression on a cylinder. Is there really any way i can check for it to be a head gasket or piston or would i have to take the head off to find out?

I'd get someone to do a leak-down test on it.

They put compressed air into the cylinder and you can tell where its escaping from.

This wont give you the positive answer (ie. air leaking past the piston could be a piston, cylinder sleeve or rings), but it will give you an idea as to if its piston/block, head/head gasket or a valve.

Most mechanics should have the guages to do it.
