hey...i am a current impreza wrx owner and my friend and i are embarking on a 240sx venture which we will split all costs. we found a 1990 240 se for $1300. problem is, the car has 183,000mi, but starts, idles, and runs fine. the history of the car is unknown as the owner bought it at an auction. i drove it and the clutch is near stock, engine sounds and looks very clean for a high mileage car. an sr20 will be going in, but we planned on not doing that install for a few months, as he wants to drive it daily and not have to drop $2000 in unneccassary parts. the body is pristine, except for small rust spots on drivers sideskirt. no overheating. ac/heat, etc. all good. my question is in your experienced opinion, what do you think? are there any telltale signs for me to look for in this car? things that would be gone by now, but wouldn't be noticable until i have the car for a few weeks...

any comments are welcomed...

thanks,

-salvatore

if the timing chain isn't rattling too bad and the engine runs fun then it should stay good for a few months atleast..mine has 202,000 and it's my dependable daily driver(i've only done timing chain and radiator in the last 10,000)...if anyhting breaks then just park it and get ready for the sr20...-

I say, just go for a very long test drive with all sorts of driving conditions...You should be able to tell if everything checks out! I bought a 89 240 SX several years ago with about the same miles. I could tell it hadn't been taken care of but after I tuned it up and gave it some TLC I was quite suprised how good a car it still was! Very reliable even! Good luck!

1300 sounds like a darn good price for a 240 with a good body and smooth running engine. rust is cancer though, beware! if its a hatch, open it up and pull back the interior panel on the underside of the hatchback, check for rust there. good luck with your project and keep us updated on your progress
