on a J30. I took a look at mine and I see a fragment of rubber at the very top, the rest of the boot must have disintegrated a long time ago. Surprisingly the shaft looks clean and bright. I assume it would be a major job to replace the bellows.BTW, what is a typical cost for replacing the front struts including parts and labor?

Easy job, actually.

Drop the whole assembly (remove 3 nuts on top and whatever attaches it at the bottom). Go to a shop that'll take the springs off the assembly (any suspension shop with a spring compresser) and reinstall them on the new struts (with new dust boots / bumpstops, they're all one piece). Reinstall in reverse order of removal.

Get the boots and struts from one of our OEM suppliers and save some $$$. I think Tokico makes a nice replacement for cheaper than OEM.
