all right this is my story. My car is a 90 hatch with 226006 miles on it and its been running horribly lately. the alternator has gone bad and so has the battery. i decided to replace both of them today after school. But, my car broke down on the way there. here's what happened:-oil light came on and i pulled over-smelt burnt oil-car battery dies-dipstick gave bad readings after long waits-call dad for jump-jumped -car laggy as hell-changed alt -jumped-lots of white smoke and the car seemed to choke to death-oil level seemed low -car on the side of the road

someone please help me. im not sure if the problem is major or not. i just need the motor to run for a few more months. thanks guys

also i would like to add- the car had the timing chain issue that i didn't get fixed. when i drained the oil, i noticed a lot more than i had recently put in. the oil was also a little green in color-same color as coolant. Also i want to mention that the car ran really hot the night before. that's why i added more coolant. could this be a hole in the timing cover? and is it expensive of hard to repair? thanks again

Your head gasket is done. If your oil is mixing with coolant that is most definitely the head gasket. The white smoke was most likely the coolant burning.

Sorry :(

The SOHC motors have problems with the chain eating through the front cover. If your chain has been making noise for a while there is a good chance that is where your coolant leak is coming from(hole in the front cover) You would actually have to pull the front cover to check this. If there is no hole in the front cover, then check the head. Or you can check the compression and a blown headgasket will show up there.

By running coolant in the oil very bad things happen. Mainly the bearings are no longer protected and the motors life is greatly shortened. Not a very good thing to do if you want your car to last any length of time.

You can get 'em for cheaper than that especially in metro areas with an active swap scene.

I recall a member in SoCal picking one up for $250 some months ago.

And $1000 isnt all that much either.I once paid $3500 for a VH45DE in poor shape ( of course thatw as not a good buy).

Conversely I got lucky a few months ago and picked up a Good VH45DE for $1500.
