I heard that some lube might help a little.

isn't it because of the little bushing on the end of the shifter? I think it wears out often. I had a similar problem on the stock shifter. At 2k and up it would start moving around then I got a bushing from another shifter I had lying around and it when away. You can buy that part fromt he dealer. Should be inexpensive.

Um, what kind of short shifter do you have? If its BRM i don't think you can do anything about the extra noise, if it's not a BRM, the bushing is the culprit, it may be too small for the shift linkage, so it rotates around.

I have an ebay short shifter (RVM) and it didn't rattle but it rotated around a lot which was a bit disconcerting. So i pried the bushing off the stock shifter and put it on the ebay one... and voila! it's very tight now.

Try wrapping some good tape over whatever is rattling till it's snug. Some people on this board have done that with theirs and it seems to alleviate the rattling problem permanently.
