Is there any way to replace the clutch w/o pulling the engine?

Discuss the RB20, RB25 and RB26 series engines.

i helped change the clutch on my friends rb20 and we did it with it in the car, but it was a pain in the ***, we loosened the motor mounts and jacked up the front of the engine and we were able to do it but it was still hard.

the timing belt isnt hard it just takes a while, you have to remove everythoing in fon the front of the engince to access it.

Clutch- Yes it can be done. If you have access to a hydrolic lift it will make your life a lot easier obviously. If not, just be prepared to be under the car a lot.

Timing belt- Yes. You will have to remove the FMIC if you have one, then the radiator and also your front bumper as well as the front bumper support. Should be able to pull both the upper and lower timing belt cover from there.

The belt itself is not that hard to change. You will need a pulley puller to remove the harmonic balancer, then you will be able to pull the lower cover. You will also need to remove the crank angle sensor, make sure you mark where it is positioned. Once you are to that point it is just a matter of making sure the engine is at TDC so you can be sure everything is lined up properly once you put the new belt on. Loosen the tensioner and the belt will come right out.

Good luck

isnt a simple matter of getting the transmission out of the way? Why would you need to pull the motor to get a clutch replaced?

I would imagine the clutch you buy will come with one. I bought a Spec stage 3 clutch a couple years back and it came with the tool as well as a new throwout bearing.

well my motor is going to have to be pulled to put a clutch in as well. the top bolts on the transmission sit right next to the firewall, so u can forget it.

I have Mckinney mounts and I have pulled my transmission by putting car on jack stands, dropping driveshaft and wrestling it out. Putting it back was a little tuff but still very doable.

It can be done in the car, its going to be a royal pain. I can look forward to that... I just got another transmission.

I did not have to pull my FMIC etc to get to my timing belt. I did it all through the top after pulling the radiator (I don't have an a/c condenser).

I've pulled my transmission out two or three times without removing the engine, its not that hard really although it is a very tight fit, I had to jack up the front of the motor to get enough clearance for the bellhousing, i also leave the driveshaft in so it doesnt pour out fluid

Makes me count my blessings for having access to a fully equipped facility whenever  I usually use an upper engine cradle...remove the srut tower bolts and the lower crossmember.Lower the engine enough to get the bellhousing out,use the hydraulic trans jack attach the trans, dislocate the front half of the DS unbolt the transmission and slave cylinder, shifter etc....Roll the sucker out.I have done this with ample room for an rb25 setup....usually a trans job or clutch takes roughly 4 hours or so.

Took me a little over 3hrs including jacking car up and putting on jack stands, now tell me what I have won!!!! Messing with crossmembers, wires and loosening hoses is a waste of time. Yes, dropping the crossmember makes things very easy but you then have to fool around with other things. Touch as little as possible to make a job work out right.
