Is there any way to identify a potentially problematic VK45?

The oil consumption of the VK45 is a well-known issue here. I'm currently considering an M45 that is out of warranty (72K on the odometer). Is there any way to determine if the engine in the car is going to turn into a nightmare without driving it for an entire oil change cycle?

check the oil and if its low, beware...

Unfortuately i dont really thinks theres a way you can tell by just looking at a car without driving it for 1000-2000 miles.

I agree with Wes ... unfortunately, you just cannot tell since the oil consumption over a simple check (even a few days) does not say anything.

A really bad offender might have more emissions than normal, I suppose. Or, you could try a completely cold start (not on a cold day) and see if you see any smoke out the tailpipe or smell burning oil.

But, these are rare situations.

Can an Infiniti dealer pull all the service records for the car for every time it was brought into any Infiniti dealer? Perhaps the previous owner might have brought it in for oil consumption...

Measure the static cranking compression and the running compression [will set codes] reset between 8 tests. Look at spark plugs.

Buy an extended warranty service insurance policy!

Now that is an excellent idea - there is a reason you have the title of Super Moderator ! Burnt oil ought to show up there for sure.

Extended warranty would definately be a must if I got a Y34. With such a complex car I would not want to see a repair bill for anything non-wear. Would Infiniti dealers accept a warranty purchased through Toyota? The car I'm looking at is offered for sale by the Toyota store that's part of the dealership group I work for in the summer.

Just read the warranty they offer. It should not be restricted to Toyota dealers only. It would be nice if it wasn't 3rd party.
