Is there a way to increase the idling RPM on the 97 J30?

Everytime I start up my car, I get this "hickup" like the engine is about to shut down or stall. I just purchased this car, and the seller had a tune-up done a few thousand miles before. It seems like the idling RPM was adjusted too low during the tune up. This "hickup" only happens when I start the car after the engine had cooled. Is there a way I can manually increase the RPM?

And my J30 sometimes shifts abruptly from 1st to 2nd gear. I was told by a member of this forum that the J30 is notorious for doing this, but I just wanted to know if this would harm my transmission in any way. It only happens for the first 5-10 mins after driving off. And I do let the car run a few minutes after starting up before leaving. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like you need to clean the throttle bores and intake runners. There should be other posts on this. You might try a transmission fluid change to synthetic, some of the members report improvement after this.

Thanks, Professor_MIke. Will do. Although I have checked the transmission fluid before purchasing the car and it was fine, with no burnt smell. Besides, the car only has 50,000 miles on it. However, the last 9,000 miles were logged on within a 3 month period (freeway miles, though). Could that kind of hard driving damaged my transmission? Have a happy Holiday. Take care.

I don't believe you would damage the transmission with driving, however some members report improvement with fluid changes to synthetic. Let us know if it helps.

Okay. Will do. Thanks for all your help, especially with the tips on the binding windows. Take care.

Get a transmission pan drop and filter change, too. The new J30 transmission filter replacement has been redesigned. It's time to think about your 60K mile service.

Thanks VimyJ. I do have a 97.5 J30. Are you telling me that I should ask the mechanic for the newer filter? I currently live in Iowa City, and there are no Infinity dealership here. Would any transmission place know how to do a transmission flush, pan drop and filter replacement on the 97 J30? Thanks.

any decent place should know. ask them what they do first. ask if they just do a pan drop or a flush or both... a flush is gonna cost you more because of the time, machine and oil that is used to flush out the transmission, but it is worth it. if they start to give you beef about not doing a flush, walk out and go somewhere else.
