Ok, so I don't have a 240 yet, but I plan on getting one and making it my first build. I'll be new to all of it, so I'll probably mess up, but that's besides the point. I learn through trial and error.

What I wanted to know, is if there is a way the fabricate some type of pipe or something that I can just put on whenever I want to, and take off whenever I want to that will quiet down the sound of the exhaust. I want mine to be somewhat loud (not ear piercing, but not like a moped either), but I also want to learn how to drift in this car aswell. So I'll probably be practicing in a parking lot, because drifting really interests me (I'm 19, shocker huh?). I do not want to have a crappy drift missile. I want to keep my car nice and sound good, but be able to make it sound like a completely stock exhaust when needed. Because I don't want the cops called on me (I know it's a chance regardless, I'm not stupid) and I also don't want to wake people up that have to get up early in the morning, since I'll be practicing late at night (probably around 2 or 3).

But what I would like to know, is this even possible without changing the exhaust sound full time? I know it would never completely muffle the sound, or even get close to it, but is there some way to just temporarily dampen the sound? I don't care if it would look ridiculous, I wouldn't be cruising the streets with it on lol. I would just like to know people's opinions on this.

You mean like this?

You could just run whatever quiet exhaust you want, and then put an exhaust cutout in there to be loud when you want.

Hmm interesting, wouldn't it be bad for the engine tho since (I'm assuming) it blocks one side? Would it not just float around in there are cause possible problems? In my head I imagined some weird, multi-turn based pipe that would just go all over the place. I wasn't sure what to expect. Is that what that bypass gate is made for or what is it's actual use?

Just watched a video on it, and it did sound a bit quieter with this thing. It's not to bad on price either really, kinda worried about the part of finding power to it. I haven't quiet figured out wires, and the electrical part of cars. I understand the basics of the engine itself and the rebuilding process, but I'd have to read up on it so I don't splice something and ruin a harness or something. You think it would be expensive to have a shop wire it, or is it really not that difficult. I know it's not easy, but is it as hard as I'm thinking it is?

An electric cutout is incredibly easy to wire up.

With that said, welcome aboard!

A few thoughts, since I've been in the 240 scene since you were in 3rd grade and own an exhaust company that builds badass catbacks for the 240sx (and other Nissans)... I'll skip the old guy lecture on 'first things first,' because learning and researching is awesome and half the fun.

I can tell you (as will most other guys who have a lot of 'slide miles' under their arses), you don't need to do a thing to the car to get your practice in. The car doesn't care what exhaust is on it, and leaving it stock is just fine (an exhaust cutout on an otherwise-stock KA-powered S-chassis isn't going to add magical asskicking unicorn power or make the tail end hang out anyway).

Parking lot practice is great, but organized events are the place to REALLY learn (and keep your license intact).

With all that said, get your car, get back in here and share your starting point. There's a TON of useful info here (240sx.org goes all the way back to an old-school mailing list in the mid 90's), and most of us have owned one or more S-chassis. We've seen every mod known to man, and performed most of them. We've turned POS 'missile' cars into daily drivers, and I built a bagged, stanced, 400+hp turbo KA droptop 240sx that changed the game back in the day.

You're in a great place among awesome people, so read 240sxtech.com, post, ask questions, wear out the search button, and have a blast. Welcome home bro. :)

Why thank you man! Haha, but I'm not initiated yet lol. Still need to find myself a 240 that meets my standards and budget. I just want a fairly nice 240 for a daily, and then later I can buy a shell and then start from scratch. I'll probably start just rebuilding the stock KA instead of doing a swap, because I don't really much care for the sr20's. Don't know why, just don't like them. I do plan on a 1jz/2jz in the future tho once I've learned from my first build.

It's just so hard too find a nice 240, or at least decent. Most around me don't even run, and if they do, they are usually kinda overpriced because of all the small things they've done that I don't really need or want for the time being. I've seen 2 of them that were perfect, but my budget wasn't built up entirely yet and I missed out on them. One of them was literally only up for a day.

I'll find one eventually, and I'll definitely be more in-depth with my research. And thanks for the friendly welcome tho :D

Keep an eye on our classifieds section. 240s go up for sale on there every now and then.
