i need help!i changed the head gasket on my 1983 1/2 nissan/datsun 720 Z24 and upon completion can not get it started..the carb keeps flooding and no fule is making it to the plugs.. its got spark but i wounder if its either the distributors 180 out or did i not get the chain set right...or both.. i followed the repiar manual as far as not removing the front cover and not altering the chain position in relation to the crank...i've tryed aranging the plugs in multiple combinations to see if i could correct the firing order for being 180 out...now im thinking of droping the oil pump and manualy turning the drive spindle 180.. does this all make sense??? what do i do if thats not the case? any advice will help!

First off Welcome to NICO and this is the link to the 720 forum datsun-720-forum.html

I love that you are doing this all yourself and gungho about it.

If you are going through all this trouble already, whynot take the motor out, put it on a stand, clean it up and take the front timing off and inspect it and reset it to spec and then throw it back in? I have a 4x4, and its pretty easy to take out the motor especially cuz its carb'd.

For 2WD its easier to take motor and trans out together.

But if that not feasible Equipment wise then you need to do the same right there. drain coolant, remove radiator and whatever so you can reach straight through the front of the truck and then remove the front cover and check and inspect all of that.

IF you KNOW the bottom chain links haven't moved while it was a TDC and rotor on 1....and you put the the head back on and in the same position, then you might just need a new distributor. I mean if you put it back with out moving the chain and got the sprocket back on without moving the chain, then it should be in time.

When you turn the crank by hand does it hit anywhere or does it spin freely? these are interference motors.

and its hard to put it in back wards if you remember where you vacuum advance is supposed to sit and the rotor has to face one and its keyed.
