I am planning on installing an amp rated at 300w RMS (4 ohm) with a sub that is 300w RMS (4 ohm).

Would doing the "Big 3" upgrade really benefit this setup, or can the Altima battery/alternator handle this without the upgrade to the wiring?

your amps quality really makes a difference but to answer your question i'm running a 1200 w RMS amp into 2 500w RMS subs and there is no noticeable draw on my car...no lights flickering / dimming and it sounds amazing and i never did the big 3.

running only 300 watts rms, you shouldn't have a problem.... also depends on what car you have... the 2.4 has a 115 amp alterbator, while the 3.5's have a 130 amp alternator... but for only 300 watts rms, the Big 3 is definately NOT necessary....

if you're running the factory battery, any system puts a strain on the factory electrical systemn, whether you notice it or not. THe big three provides more power and better grounding... more power going to the alternator means it doesn't have to work as hard to try and pull power through the 4 gauge factory cables to keep your system and the rest of the car running optimally.

Wear and tear on your system may begin to be evident in a couple of years, but only 120 watts rms isn't that bad with a 130 amp alternator...

I would never say the Big 3 is NECESSARY, but it always helps!

I'm running only 900w RMS and although I'm not noticing any sort of power loss, I'm still doing the Big 3 when Nate comes out with it. Just doing a little preventive measure and like Doc says,...it doesn't hurt to have it

definitely not needed. personally i wouldnt spend my money on the big 3 if its only 300watts.i'm running 1000w rms right now with just a cap and not the big 3 upgrade and its fine. at some point i'll switch out the system and and do the upgrade
