Is the back seat as small as advertised?

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

I am 6'3" and have two small kids. This will mainly be my wife's car, but will back seat space be non-existant with me at the helm? Any help would be appreciated, I really like this car.

I'm 6'-1" and when we carry 4 people in our EX35, the other tallest person sits in the Front-passenger Seat and split the difference... and the shortest person sits behind me.

I've heard no major complaints except for the egress out of the goofy shaped Rear-doors... but once inside, we're all comfortable.

For us it's something that only happens once in a Blue Moon.

When the "small" Kids become "large" ones, then you're gonna get tighter.

What about Car-Seats? Are you using them, too? How small are your "small Kids"?

My son is 5, but he is a tall 5, he is currently in a booster. My daughter is almost 2 and in a forward facing seat. My wife currently drives a 2007 328xi 4 door. Based on the measurements, it seem that the ex35 will be just as big or smaller than the 328xi. I wanted to move up to a small suv for more space, so I was wondering if that would be the case with the ex.

People have said that the FX is a little larger than the EX.

Please try them both out before buying, OK ?

Even if you're not remotely interested in the FX, just try it out to see the difference in Leg-room.

I know the FX is definitely bigger. I used to have a G sedan, currently drive a 2006 M35x, so I was wondering if the the EX would fit the bill since it's based on the G. Guess not.

It's not big...may even be smaller than the Civic. I am 5'10 and have trouble exiting the rear seat (the room b/w the edge of the door and the seat is quite small hence sometimes my shoe got caught in between).

Other than that, it's perfect for kids or maybe up to 5ft tall or so to sit comfortably. Short trips wouldn't be much of an issue, but longer trips the rear passengers may complain.

Compared to a 3-series coupe, the backseat has slightly more legroom (maybe 1") and definitely more headroom. It has about the same legroom as a 3-series sedan. That said, as others have mentioned, the rear doors are rather narrow and ingress/egress is not as easy as a typical sedan. I notice that my 4' 6" 8yr old climbs in facing backwards then turns around to sit. Fortunately its my wife's car that's seldom used for family rides.

The Rear seat is a little tight, but at 5'10 myself, it's ok.

The FX is a little larger than the EX, but starts $7,450 higher (MSRP). The little extra room and worse gas mileage wasn't worth the extra 20% jump in price to me ($7k+). EX handles/drives better in my opinion vs FX35.

Don't forget, many reviewers complain about the FX being cramped in the rear as well. go figure..

Once sitting in the back seat, it is pretty comfortable. I am 6' and the only issue I have is getting out. Getting in is ok, but getting out my feet seem to get jammed.
Also, my rear facing child seat has to be on the passenger side, which is unfortunate because I now loose the 60% fold, only get the 40% rear folding seat.

I am 6'3" and 225lb. People can fit behind me just not very comfortable. Also its really hard for them to get out of the car without their feet on the back of the front seats.
We have both FX and EX. My bro is 6'1" and like 275lb. I can sit behind him comfortably in the FX.
Whatever review say about the FX, they probably refer to the first gen FX which you get almost no headroom. New FX is great.

I doubt that a person over 6 feet tall would find the rear seat comfortable. When comparing the dimensions of the EX35 and the FX35, keep in mind that the EX35 is only 71" wide, which is about 5" narrower than the FX35. The EX35's relatively compact dimensions suit me because I drive it on narrow city streets and I rarely carry more than one passenger. If interior space is at all important to you, I think the FX35 is the way to go.

like others have expressed, for short trips around town it's not that bad but long trips in the backseat may get uncomfortable.

Actually test drove and sat in an ex35, loved the way it drove, couldn't deal with the size however. My 6' 3" 210lb frame was not comfortable, and my kids were not as well. Decided to go for the new 2011 bmw x3 35i, I love Infiniti, but the bmw is just bigger and suits me better. Thanks for the help.

Yes, it is.

If any of my 3 kids complains, they can walk.

Congrats...But the X3 is more $$ as well. For an everyday family car with kids I would NOT consider an EX35 or a X3 as my main family car... both too small IMHO. Even the FX is questionable.. At least they improved the X3 interior and size.

71 inches wide is a midsized cars width, nothing wrong with that. In fact the new Accord is only 71 or 72 wide. The FX is bigger, but not by that much, 10% in size or so but it's nearly $7k+ more in price.

Actually, the FX isn't that much better inside. Shoulder room is 57" vs 55" for the EX. I presume part of the excess exterior dimension is the bulging fenders on the FX.

My wife is 5'1" and I sat in the back seat behind her on one of the test drives. Granted, with her small stature, she had the driver's seat in a position that was comfortable to her but I felt the back seat was very comfortable and actually felt a little nicer than my old G35 sedan. The egress with the wheel wells intruding on the exit space was the most noticed negative in my experience.

Yes it is small. For short trips it is ok, altough it generally means putting the front seat forward and that gets right pretty quickly given the dash layout. With small kids, the tight fit means the kids shoes will be all over the back of your front seats. The kids can't help it, but if you have a dark interior, you better have a high tolerance for dusty or muddy shoe prints. Or if you are a little OCD like me, keep some leather cleaner and a rag in the trunk.

We were wine tasting last weekend. Girls in the front (both less than 5'3") and guys in the back (both more than 6'1") and we all fit fine.

But people did give us some funny looks. Like a clown car.

But I was happy. There are some knee holes in the seats. I wish they had those on airlines.

Bought the car and don't care about the backseat since I am the only one in the car almost all the time. I had a short trip (100 miles) with friends once and 2 in the back seat got sick after the trip. They complained about leg and back pain and swore never ever get into that car again.

Thats a little extreme... they've probably gotten sick and complained about other cars backseats too. The EX35 Backseat is not that bad as some make it out to be. I'm 5'10 and fit back there ok. It could be better, but I've sat in other roomier cars that the seats weren't as comfortable.

Im 6'1 and i fit pretty comfortably in the back, unless ur use to driving monster SUVs then ye this is different, but plenty more then any sedan. If u wanted an SUV then u should have gotten one, i cant understand full blown family with kids getting this..should have looked into the FX, the target demo for this car just isn't the big ol family, at least i don't think..if we had kids i would have probably gotten the fx..but just me the wifey and the pup are swimming in all this space..then again we were doing just fine in the zCoupe, lol

It is small but it is not as small as I was made to believe. I thought I would never get an EX specifically BECAUSE of the rear-seat room. I have two teenage boys. Coach baseball (bunch of baseball bags) and one son also plays hockey (bigger smellier bag) - but since I am not super tall, there is plenty of room back there for them.

:)
