been doing some research and it seems like it can go either way.

http://www.redline808forums.com/printthread?id=4705406 in this article they actually swapped in a z32 trans to mate up to a 2jz. and also claims that the z32 transmission is stronger. from what i've seen personally and experienced, the z does have a stronger transmission.

however, a lot of people claim that the z transmission isn't what it's cracked up to be...

i just want some other opinions/experiences on the subject.
the main reason i'm asking is because i've got a friend who's doing the 2jz swap into the 300zx. and he brought the idea to my attention. :gotme

Second link doesn't work, but from what I've seen and experieneced, the Z32 RS5R30A is a pretty bomb-proof transmission. There are countless 700RWHP+ Z32s on the original transmission. Synchronizers can wear out, but they can also be replaced.

Both are decent transmissions. The R154 doesn't have syncro issues. They have also been mated to 1JZ/2JZ's making damn high horsepower and are very reliable. I think I would give the nod to the R154 as far as durability, mostly due to the syncros issue. That said, I would not spend extra money to swap one into a Z unless I was doing a 2JZ swap. But, if your buddy is doing a 2J swap, then it probably is the cheapest alternative. I also wouldn't swap the Z transmission into a Toyota. The cost justification isn't there.

Agreed. Much more cost effective to keep the Toyota transmission with the 2J and the Nissan transmission with the VG. Both are very capable trannies. The R154 is actually made by Allison IIRC.
If he needs a a beefier transmission for the 2J, tell him to get the Getrag 6 speed off the Mk4 Supra.

the ONLY problem with the getrag is the pricetag that comes with it :frown:
and the r154 has thrust washer issues in stead of synchro problems. the only reason synchros wear out is from somebody not taking care of how they shift their transmission.

The reason the syncros wear out isn't due to shifting. Nissan didn't re-design the transmission because it's customers don't know how to drive a manual. I never missed a shift, quick shifted or slammed a gear and both my 4th and 2nd gear syncos were shot.
