The G35 will be G37. 350Z will be 370Z.

Are there any rumors that the Altima SE will get the 3.7L VQ?

I say no. like all other things, eventually, the VQ35 will be replaced with either the VQ37, VQ40, etc... it ay be 5 years from now, it may be 10 years from now, but it will eventually morph into something better... the only thing that stays constant is the fact that EVERYTHING eventually changes!

Agreed. I think it's gonna be a while though. Considering the new Maxima has the VQ35 in it, I don't think they'll give the Altima a more powerful engine than the Maxima. That is their flagship sedan, so I don't think making the Altima better would help those sales (especially since the Maxima brings them more money). It looks like the VQ37 will be reserved for more of the sports cars/coupes/roadsters. Maybe a few gens down the line though...

agreed - you wouldn't put a smaller engine in your flagship car. the vq37 will probably stay as the highest end performance engine, just as it has been the past year or so.

I think they'll eventually lower the displacement as a result of some new technology or manufacturing process that produces more power with a smaller displacement, probably back down to ~3.0-3.2, but that wont be a for a good while.

Remember the 2007 Nissan Altimas were MORE POWERFUL than the 2007 Maxima was!

not likely, the they've already had the VQ20, VQ23, VQ25, VQ30, VQ35, VQ37, and VQ40 Nissan doesn't go backwards!!!

If you know the history of the VQ's, you'd know that they have NEVER had one version of the VQ for over ten years, the VQ30DET being produiced for 10 years exactly... with that said, its seems logical that the VQ35 will eventually be replaced completely... you don't make progress by staying stagnant, and although the VQ35 is a bas a$$ engine, it can and WILL be improved!

Yup, the VQ series engine has had nearly 15 variations over the years ranging from 2.0L to 4.0L types in a number of different vehicles. We will certainly see improvements over and over again in the coming years.

I didn't mean the VQ directly, I meant nissan in general in terms of their flagship engine. It's only a matter of time for them to create a completely new engine that's not only smaller but better in every way. That's just the flow of technology. Thats how I see it, at least.

well that's doesn't answer the question the OP asked, but I see where you're going... I'm not an engine guy, bu what you're proposing doesn't appear to be the direction automobile companies take... to date it seems as though they increase displacement when improving their vehicles...

I think what you're suggesting would involve a new paradigm of engine design, and of course that's possible, it just hasn't happened
