Is super unleaded really better?

I know that on my fuel door it recommends premium fuel, and also I have been told by former owners of the ka engine that the ka's are actually made to run off the higher octane fuel. Is this really true and does it make that big of a difference?

good for high compression/turbo engines. On moderate compression, like the ka, it arguably leaves carbon deposits due to its resistance to burn. Don't know why, but my stock ka feels better w/premium (maybe the carbon deposits have increased my cr?)
