just curious in case engine is toast and have to get a new one. whether it'll just plug right back in and work regardless of year of s13 engine.

Some of the colors of the wires are different, but they are still all pinned right. The Kouki blacktop S13 harness may have a couple more differences.

1989-1990 = S13 CA18DET1991-1996 = S13 SR20DET Redtops and early model blacktops.1997-1998 = S13 SR20DET (Kouki) later model blacktops.

Zenki loosely means "early"Chuki means "middle"Kouki means "last or latest"

So on S13 chassis, 1989-1990 S13's are zenki. 1991-1996 are chuki (this depends on the country your in though). 1997-1998 S13's are kouki.

so any wiring difference between the 'chuki' 91-96 redtop or blacktops? If same, I want to buy a newer (closer to '96) chuki blacktop to replace my red top that's going to die...

i think you may have an early model blacktop.i think the later uses a j7 ecu.i have an earlier blacktop and I used to run a 62 until I got my E5.Both ecu's were run using a redtop harness.

The kouki blacktop S13 SR20DET (1997-1998) runs off of a different ECU as mentioned.

If you try to run a kouki model blacktop off the #62, #63, E5, or E6 ECU's, only the first cylinder will fire. These ECU's can be used on a kouki blacktop but the wires need to be repinned.

So if your blacktop is running off a redtop ECU then its from a 1994-1996 180SX.

Here are the different ECU's for the S13 SR20DET:#62 manual redtop#63 auto redtopE5 manual early blacktopE6 auto early blacktopJ4 manual later blacktopJ? auto later blacktop

I just went tru this crap this year. I started off with a 95 blacktop and it blew due to a bad oil pump. Now running a redtop. Like they said, as long as you can verify the year of your blacktop, you can run a redtop in there with your blacktop harness and ECU. Check the ECU to verify that you have an E5. Personally id recommend you to source a redtop. Preferably and AUTOMATIC redtop. Less abuse than the 5 speed for the most part. Stay away from blacktops since if you think bout it, they all came from 180sx, whens the last time uve heard of a grandpa drive a 180sx and drift it? You have a better chance of getting ahold of a redtop thats taken care of than a blacktop.
