Well im almost finished putting in my blacktop sr20 into my coupe but I ran into a huge problem. When the engine was first put into the car before the drive shaft was installed, the transmission would go into the gears but would not go into nuetral. No matter what we did, the drive shaft would not spin independantly of the engine. Well after a while fiddling with that, the transmission would not shift into any gear but 5th or reverse. Does the transmission have some sort of lock on it, or is my transmission siezed? The front clip was 100% stock even the stock airbox and the turbo has zero shaft play in it so I do not believe that it was abused. The importer said it was rear ended in Japan, is it possible that the old driveshaft bent something inside the transmission from the accident? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

it's possible that the output shaft got tweaked if the driveshaft got slammed forward by the rear impact. The reason the trans only likes 5th and reverse is cause they're on the same gear shaft, and the output is now at such an angle that it will only accept gears off that shaft.

Your best bet right now is to get a KA gearbox and swap your SR belhousing onto it. The gears are all the same except the 5th gear ratio, but you won't really notice the difference.

Awesome, thanks for the insight. Its too bad my old KA transmission had worn out synchros. If I swap bellhousings can I still use an SR20 clutch and flywheel, or will i need a KA one?

SR stuff. The input shaft of the gearbox has the same number of splines on both versions. If it weren't for the different bellhousing bolt pattern on the SR, you could literally just bolt a KA trans up with no hassle.

If the shift forks are indeed out of alignment, how hard of a fix is that? Will a shop need torack open the gear box? A friend of mine has a recently rebuilt KA transmission that i might be able to pick up for like $150. Do you think this will end up being the cheapest route? Thanks again guys

i broke the fifth/reverse fork and decided to swap for the sr transmission for a ka and when i swapped the bellhousinf the ka shift forks must have moved cause now the gears are all wierd. so i need to pull the tail section and realign them
