Is my tps supposed to look like this?

I have a 92 240sx.

It looks like my tps is unplugged. There is a three prong plug on the tps that has nothing plugged into it. But there is a wire that plugs into the bottom of the tps. Is the other plug for checking the unit? or has my tps been screwed with ?

looks like this. the wire you see in front of it seems to plug in under it. IS that normally where the tps plugs in?

from what I understand thats the TPS plug/bracket and each of the connectors is for-Closed-partial throttle-WOT (wide open)

so if yours isnt plugged in I would find out why.

I've seen Nissans with two plugs and one plug on the TPS, not sure why. Pure speculation but maybe there are two computers that need to know throttle position and that is why two plugs. It would be easy enough to check with a multimeter if both sockets on the TPS read identical. Plug in as many plugs as you have.

Since i have a little experience with this myself, being that i had problems with this before, i'll share my experience.

I'll start by saying I believe you have idling problems.

The throttle position sensor is OFTEN mistaken. The black box you see there serves three purposes: Throttle position, Idle switch, and Wide open switch.

The connections you're missing is NOT the throttle position sensor, these three are for the IDLE SWITCH. Your throttle position sensor connection is the connection that runs off the bottom of the black box (which you stated was properly connected).

Your car DOES have a connection to plug onto the three pins you see (idle switch), it should be there somewhere, search for it and connect it. Sometimes the pin comes off and the connection gets loose. With your idle switch disconnected, you will definitely have idling problems, rpms fluctuating, comming close to stalling..etc. Since the idle switch isn't connected, it can't switch on the idle air control valve which serves to inject air at closed throttle.

The throttle position sensor notifies the ecu of closed throttle, open throttle, and wide open throttle by way of different voltage readings from the sensor itself.

I have looked everywhere for something to connect to it, with no luck. I think It may have had its engine replaced (Engine has had a number written on it with a magic marker) So if he neglected to attach it It might not be anwhree near where it should be.Is there a place where I can get diagrams or schematics for the ka24?Thanks

Yea go to your local auto parts store and get a FSM. That will be the best thing you could ever do.

The books at auto stores are not factory service manuals. I would not reccomend you wasting money behind them. Buy an actual factory service manual, you can pick it up from e-bay or order though a dealership. The details the factory service manul goes into is by far superior to the auto store manuals.

Is it possible that your car's original engine didn't have this and as a result you in fact have no plug to plug in?

Im kinda thinkin that may be the case,

I am not sure if it is the original engine.

I think I am gonna go shopping for 240sx's and when I get them to pop the hood I will check and see if mine resembles theirs, then say "no thanks" to the salesman.

No you take a lengthy test drive first; check how it launches, drifts and panic brakes. Bring it back with bald tires and tell them "I'm not too crazy about the color, thanks anyway"

Reread this whole thread and you'll find the answer. If you don't, then your below stupid. Yes, every s13 has a TPS.

In the picture above, it have three prongs. But for my 89, the cable that connects to it only has two wires in it. As I let my car idle, I unpluged it. But nothing happens.

I tihnk Its depends on if its an auto or 5-spd. does your auto have it plugged in?

I have a 5-speed. There's another wire that comes out of the black box. I unpluged that while idle and my car reved up to 1500. But as for the three prong plug, no thing happens when I unplug it. Just FYI, my car is hard to start cold, idles rough, and runs lean (my car has 106K and it passed emissions with flying colors :pface ).

Just about every computer cotrolled car has a TPS. It does just what it's name implies, tells the computer how much throttle you are giving it so it can adjust the fuel delivery and timing according to tables in the computer. If it is not set properly the car will run wrong.

Fever, relax already. Everybody starts somewhere, show a little love:slap

I looked it up in my AllData(Electronic FSM) and it states that the connection is for the Throttle Switch(Idle and WOT). It also states that these are not used by the ECM to manage the ECCS system. They are used only for ECM self-diagnostic purposes only.

Having this unconnected should not have any effect in the way the ECM and motor react to throttle opening.
