Is my P/S pump dying?

While idling yesterday, my power steering pump started making a really high pitched whining noise. It's not the belt and sounds like it's coming right from the pump itself.

Any ideas?

Have you checked your power steering fluid level? If it's low, the pump will cavatate and make weird squealing noises. Try topping off the reservoir and see what happens.

Could be, does the steering seem less responsive?

No steering is just as responsive... will check fluid again, but I think the resevoir is pretty full.

it might be starting to go, i warn you though, the sound will get worse quick. this is what happened i my last car. it started making a noise like your describing and within four days it got soo bad i had to take it to the mechanic,i made it just in time. however this was on a ford probe. so if it gets worse replace it asap.

ps. my steering felt fine as well

I have replaced a failed PS pump becuyse the bearings went in it. Sounds like you describe. Most likely from a belt that is too tight.

Replace the PS pump, unfrgivn. If you have the old KA, just swap the pulley. The pump itself is the same I think
