Doing a white bunny setup, got everything together. Went to crank up the car, and the starter just spun. I thought I may have had a bad starter that wouldn't engage but after i pulled off the starter, I noticed this on the flywheel:

So...it looks like it's engaging but the flywheel seems to be too small....because there are marks on it!

It's a plain, straight up D21 flywheel, 280zx clutch and pressure plate. Went together just nicely. WTF is going on? I didn't think there were d21 flywheels that were ever smaller?

In case you were wondering, I didn't have anything to compare it to. Doing a straight up ka24e auto to ka24de 5 speed. Had the engine completely put together before I even had the car. I've googled a good solid 20 minutes and came up with no one who has run into this...

This is what I see on the starter:

I was just searing as well and I see noting about using another starter for that set up. I wonder if the flywheel is correct.

Aren't there two different flywheels that require the correct starter gear? I don't think the difference is the size of the flywheel but the amount of teeth. I don't have the numbers handy but maybe that's your problem. If I'm not mistaken, you could use either or but you just have to make sure the starter matches the particular flywheel. Or I could be wrong. Just a thought. Good luck though!

Figured it out. The solenoid wasn't engaging at all. The scar on the flywheel teeth was from the starter itself, from sticking it in there and twisting it. Noob mistake. Now I've got bigger problems
