For the past few weeks, my timing chain has been rattling all the time. It was really loud and annoying, making my car sound like it was diesel. I called the dealer yesterday to get a quote to get the timing chain replaced and all that fun stuff, but i didnt get ahold of anyone. So i go about my normal business, and decide to go to the mall to buy a DVD. Right when i get there and am pulling into my parkin spot, the car stalls. I figured this was the same issue as before with the bad idle, which cleared up with a simple wiggling of the wires for my MAFS comin off the intake. So i get out of the mall, start to head home, and it stalls again. Pull into a huge open spot in the parkin lot and I try messin with the wires, but it didnt do anything. SOB! I start the journey home, bout 15 miles just hoping i dont hit any red lights so it wouldnt stall. So on my way home from the mall, the rattle gets louder, and being only a mile away from home, I decide to go 40 mph on the highway to be safe. Less than a half mile to go, i hit a red light, and my car stalls out, and i look behind me and a HUGE cloud of white smoke is in my rear view. W$#%@#$%@! so i pull into the turn lane, hop out and start pushin. When it stalled, i didnt hear any noise or anything like that. I get it to the side of the road, and its still smokin and whatnot. Sat there for awhile, and when my dad came and got me, he decided i should try and turn it on. It would turn over, but the engine wouldnt stay on. so we call and get it towed to the dealer, where its at right now. Just waiting for them to call back, cuz they said they might look at it today.

What are the chances that my engine is completely shot?If the chain completely broke, would it have made a crapload of noise? And if it just jumped a tooth, what kind of damage could it have done?

well, there's several things it could be. it sounds like it jumped a few teeth or something. if the car even attepts to run then your chain is still there turning the cams meaning it didn't break. if it doesn't even attempt to start when you turn it over then it could be broken.

basically, if it jumped teeth you could have bent valves. but it may not have jumped that far and it could just be badly out of time on the cams (did the car feel really weak when you were driving?). it's hard to say though without getting more info.

It didnt run for me when i tried before i got it towed, but i talked to my friends bro who works the service desk at the nissan dealer i took it to, and he said that it started for them and they got it in the garage. the plan was to take it today to get brakes, then take it to the dealer next week to get them to chekc out the chain, but it died yesterday. So they're gonna fix the brakes, before they do anything else. He said it could be a problem with feul line or somethin, possibly a leaky injector. he said it was running really rough, but it started. i asked about price for timing chain install and he said around 1000.

if its around 1000 bux, i might try and see if i can find a dohc and get a shop to install that for me. i really dont see a point in spending 1k on this motor.

you can do a timing chain for alot less th an 1000 if you can do it yourself.

So the dealer calls and talks to my dad, and they say there isnt an issue with my timing chain. first off, it has beenr attling for the past 3 weeks, and it sure sounds like a chain to me. They say its my injectors that were leaking. They quoted 890 to fix that problem. Then my brakes......Since monday my brakes went to ****. Had to slow down waaaaaaaaay before i needed to stop, squeak all the time, shook bad when i would brake hard. Apparently my master cylinder is shot. They said it was almost empty, must've leaked out. They said 500 for that, and i still dont think they included rotors and pads into that price, not sure though.

I would try and do this myself, but I have NO tools or anything else that i would need.Im starting to think about finding a ka24de and getting that swapped in for now, since i'm broke. just gotta do some searchin and find a decent shop around here and see what they have to say

Used KA24 are dirt cheap if you live close to swap happy markest and if you dont a drive to one might pay off.I keep hearing of folks buying replacement KA's for a couple hundred bucks.

Yup but ya gotta know how ta wheel and deal with those junkyard owners they'll sell you anything for twice what its worth unless you know how to bargin with them. But 300 is the ideal price for a <100k engine around where i live.
