Alright, I'm already pretty sure that my alternator is shot and not charging my battery, it just hasn't been warm enough to pull it yet. Ever since I got my 240 it's had some iffy electrical problems, in the beginning nothing electronic but the headlights worked period, but when I put a new ignition tumbler all the stuff started to work.

Problem still is that stuff only started to work when I rev the engine a few times. I've checked a few connections right now and haven't found any loose ones yet, other than the ground on the battery cable which I tightened up the first day I got it. Last time I started the 240 everything started working fine but eventually all the electronics died after letting it run for about 10 minutes(I just think the battery is almost dead, alternator doesn't work and last time I charged it was 3 weeks ago, and I've ran it for about 30-40 minutes since then and drove it about 2-3 miles so it's about time for the battery to die)

ANYWAY.... My dad's friend who's worked on a lot of Nissan's and Datsun's has said that he thinks the problem might be with the regulator on the alternator. What's your guys opinion on this? I guess when I put in my new alternator in I'll find out but I just wanted to check before I pulled it.

Hook up a electrical tester to the alternator. Kragen will do it for free.

You won't work on your car because it's cold outside, but complain that only 7 people looked at your post during the OVERNIGHT hours on a Wednesday?

Do you think there are hundreds of us that just sit there waiting for somebody to post so we can look at it?

NICO Forums are a wonderful resource and have been extreamly helpful to me and those that don't abuse it.

As for your car problem: I agree with the mechanic. It sounds like the regulator, internal to your alternator, is bad. Replace the allternator.

That's all well and good but I posted it at 7pm central time which is around the time I usually see the most traffic on this site. As for the cold comment, I don't know what you consider cold in Vegas, but here in northern minnesota it usually gets easily in the negatives, and since the heating and insulation isn't finished in my garage yet it gets a little hard to work on ****.

Back on topic I am going to pull the alternator soon and get it tested at NAPA just to make sure that it really is bad, then I found someone who's selling a slightly used working one for only $30 plus shipping.

Sounds like you've got the right idea. Get that alternator tested and if it's fine, it's got to be that voltage regulator.

if you live near an autozone, i know they test your charging system fo free right in the parking lot w/out removing the unit for bench testing...

w/ my alternator dying on me a year ago... the cause was worn brushes... the battery voltage stayed the same w/ the car not started & when started

If I charged the battery I think I could make it to autozone, it's about 17 miles away, I suppose I could have my friend follow me with cables. Yeah my voltage stays the same when it starts up to, so I'm pretty sure my alternator's had it.

I've thought about rebuilting it, but I've never rebuilt Nissan alternators, only Ford, Chevy, and a few dodge, besides it's too much hassle when I found one for cheap.

I know its obvious, but drive there during daylight to keep the headlights off and keep the radio off so you wont be powering the radio and speakers.
