Hi everyone
So my brother recently got a 2012 Altima 2.5S with 84k miles, and we have been trying to fix the fuel gauge issue. Sometimes, when we start it up, the fuel gauge will not show the correct level. But if we turn the ignition on and then check the fuel gauge to see if it is reading correctly, then start it up, it will read the correct level. The dealer we bought it from has replaced a lot of fuel related things already. They've replaced the fuel pump, fuel sender unit, and even sent the gauge cluster to Nissan to check and see if it is reading right, which they said it was reading fine. The thing is, my dad is still convinced it is the gauge cluster causing the issue. The next thing my dad wants to replace is the gauge cluster with a used one off of ebay. He wants to know if vehicle mileage is stored in the gauge cluster itself or somewhere else in the car, such as the BCM or computer. Any help with our fuel issue or question is greatly appreciated.

Mileage is stored on the cluster in eprom. If the cluster must be replaced, upgraded or swapped from kilometers to miles, the odometer must be reprogrammed to match the correct mileage that the vehicle has traveled.

Disclaimer: Misrepresenting mileage upon the resale of a vehicle without full disclosure is illegal.

One of the most interesting things about car odometers is how the information is transmitted to the dashboard. Instead of a spinning cable transmitting the distance signal, the distance (along with a lot of other data) is transmitted over a single wire communications bus from the engine control unit (ECU) to the dashboard.

The engine control unit counts all of the pulses and keeps track of the overall distance traveled by the car. This means that if someone tries to "roll back" the odometer, the value stored in the ECU will disagree. This value can be read using a diagnostic computer, which all car-dealership service departments have.
