I found a 1990 240sx 5-speed for $200. The body looks good other than a few paint chips and a few minor dings. The bad news. The valve cover is off the motor, I'm pretty sure the timing chain needs reset, the windshield is cracked, the interior is for the most part gutted (but parts included for interior and motor), and the title is lost.

The guy said he'd get it re-titled, he'll make sure I have all of the interior and motor parts, and he'd try to get a new windshield. So.... Is it worth it? Or is it gonna be a huge headache?

Thanks in advance!

(I'm a newb here BTW!)

Welcome to Nico.

Start by demanding him to retitle it if you're going to buy it. I think if the body is straight then it's a pretty good deal. If he is going to include the missing parts so much the better. I doubt he intends to install them for you though so as long as you can do the work it doesn't sound to bad.

Keep in mind that a KA can normally be found on here for $500 or less. A set of used s14 seats wouldn't set you back much either and at that point you may be able to have a running and drivable 240 for a little more than a thousand dollars once you include some miscalaneous parts like belts and water pump.

Either way... it's going to be a lot of work. But it's not impossible. So since you have a WRX already what set you to looking at 240's?

Bad news. The guy said he can't (or won't) get it re-titled. He said it's a huge PITA so he doesn't want to do it. But he said he'd sell it to me as a parts car if I want it still. I'd say I can get him to knock some of the $$$ off of it then.

So now the question is; is it worth $100-150 for a parts car? Or should I just try and find a good running 240 from a guy with the title in hand?

I actually have an STi. But I'm trying to sell it so I can finish out college. The payments and insurance are HIGH as hell! I've always been a fan of 240's and since they are cheap, I figured that I'd get one until I'm through with school and tinker with it.

Well considering I got a Hood, bumper, and front fenders for $200 a few days ago, I'd say that even if you dont plan on fixing it up to drive, its still a good deal for $150-$100.

Worst case scenario I'd say your looking at spending $500-$750, also depending on how much work you do yourself, to get this thing back on the road.

Sorry I cant help with the title...it seems to me that it would just take time for that.

What will you do with the carcass when you're done pillaging parts from it? I don't know of any place that will take a shell w/o a title. This leaves you with a lump of steel that you can't do anything with.

Obviously if you have an STi then you have some money. With as relatively cheap as 240's are, I think it would be easier and far less of a headache to find a solid example for 3-4k and not have to deal with the headache of piecing it back together. Throw some basic mods at it along with some sweet wheels and tires and you have a great daily driver/autocrosser that is incredibly cheap to drive, insure and plate.

Oh yeah, when you get out of college then you can swap the hell out of it or turbo the existing motor and go Mustang huntin'.
