Hi everyone!! I'm new to the site and have been searching for a 300zx for a while. I haven't been able to find that many that I really like but I found one that's actually pretty nice but there are some issues sadly. I've been looking at this 87 300zx non-turbo and even tested it out and it's a real nice car but it won't pass smog (owner said it was just because of the cat) and he also doesn't know when or IF the timing belt was replaced (car has about 120,xxx miles). Other than that the car is original except some add-ons he had done which include a new champion radiator, new spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and a new rotor. I could probably pick it up for less than 2,000 and i do have money/TIME to put into it but does it sound like a decent deal? I do live in California and smog passing can be a pain. Please give me all the input you have it will be greatly appreciated!!

My opinion is if you like the car, no accident or mechanical problems and if its not overpriced buy it, but I'm not into Z31s myself.

Um if you like the Z31 then buy it. It looks nicer than most for sale and if you call paying some dood $100 to to pass your car a pain then i dunno what to tell ya. This is America, If you have money you dont have to follow the rules.

Where in CA are you? im in LA.

Looks like a pretty nice car. Could use some fresh wheels and a turbo ;)

Looks pretty nice, doesn't look like anybody posted on this for awhile, but you should be warned, that in LA $100 will not get "around" smog laws. You could get away with that back in the old days but no way you can do that in LA now. It is the sellers responsibility to get the car to pass the smog test, not the buyers. So if this guy is selling it the state of CA and cannot pass smog, than the car is wrecker. You will not be able to get a transfer of title completed without the clean bill of smog health, period, this the car will be illegal and never in your name.

Given that I wouldn't give the guy .10 cents for the car. However, if you wanted to see if you can figure out before hand what is wrong with it you should take it to a good mechanic that can work with a smog testing place beforehand. I see your in the valley, I used to live in West LA and have a great mechanic Z Expert. He has worked on my 84' for 20 years and I still take it back to LA for service sometimes (I live in the Bay Area now).

My advise, if you don't have a solution for smog, no go.
