is it the timing chain?

I've searched and searched on this website, and need some help still. I have a '90 240 that has 120,000 on it. When I am accelerating or when I have the gas pedal pushed down past a certain point there is a clicking noise coming from the engine. I thought it may be the timing chain, but everybody says that the timing chain only clicks at start up. mine only clicks when I'm actually driving. What could it be?

SOHC timing chain rarely needs changing, even at 120K miles. You should replace the chain guides and tensioner, that would most likely be the issue. I would only replace the chains if it shows a crap load of slack or if the segments look stretched or damaged in any way.

The DOHC motor has more moving parts, and more contact points for the chain to stretch over; It would more likely have chain replacement issues before a SOHC would IMHO.

thank you for that synopsis- You could have easily yelled "search stupid!" or just ignored the post I found the post through "search" and it does work- I am now looking at a much cheaper fix for my timing chain than I had first anticipated.

So 2BN thanks to you I am not replacing my timing chain- regardless of what that mechanic told me last year I haven't replaced it yet and she's still bangin'
