Is it the key or could it be the lock?

Ok yall (I'm from Tennessee, that's how we talk over here) - here's my question: I just bought my 90 Z from a guy who told me "don't lock the doors, the key won't hardly unlock them anymore." He went to a locksmith and they said they could rekey the locks for $35 a door (+ the trunk). My thoughts are how could both door locks and the trunk all be in such poor condition that they all need to be rekeyed? I THINK IT'S THE KEY. So here's a pic of the key, which is well worn, what do you guys think? And if you think it is the key, how could I remedy this problem? I tried getting a new key cut off of this one thinking that the lines would be slightly sharper, but that didn't work.

So you wanna laak ya caah when ya paahk it huh? I'm from Boston, that's how we talk here :chuckle:

I think you might be able to get a key cut by the dealer with the VIN. Don't quote me on that. I know they used to, not sure if they still can/will.

Thank you my Bostonian friend. I will run by a dealer tomorrow just to check. Can anyone verify this or any other ideas if this doesn't work?

Well, went to my local dealership and they told me a couple of things while they tried to cut me a key based off of my worn one unsuccessfully. The guy said that he wasn't positive about it, but if I took out the passenger's side lock the key number would be stamped on it. Does anyone know if that's true? He also said that it was possible that the starter might have gotten rekeyed at some point. Bottom line, the key he cut would start the engine but would not unlock the doors. My original key still just barely can open the doors if I wiggle it for a while, so I'm not sure what to do. Anyone got any info that could help?

If you take out the lock cylinder, the pins have numbers written on them. Based on that the locksmith can cut you a key. Its probably worthwhile to re-key the whole car if you are having continious problem.

a good locksmith can make a key for the vin, yes some cylinders are market but the z32 can be cut by the vin, it's unlikely that the ignition sylinder was changed and if you take the coavers off the column you can verify that it still has the original security bolts in place

there si no point tryint to make your locks work wiht a worn out key, I recomend you get a propper key made and if there is a problem beyond that then you might need to rekey some locks but I doubt it
