I kinda rushed into buying my Versa Hatchback SL 12/19/07 and overlooked the altimas. There's no damage on the vehicle, but I would like to know if anyone knows if I could return it for an altima. Is there a policy of some sort where I could automatically return trade without making another down payment?

I need some advice or info!!!

Thank you.

You will lose a TON of money on the trade. the instant you drove it off the lot, it lost about $4k-$5k trade-in value.

VERY few states have a clause that allows you to return a vehicle, and those few require it be within 3 days and 100 miles.

After that, it's used and you have to trade it in or sell it like any other used car.

Consumer protectionism can only go so far before it screws businesses. If dealerships had to be required to take back cars for 30-90 days, people would use them as free rentals during that time period, and dealers would have nothing but used cars on their lots.

This is why you need to make VERY sure you are buying the car you want at the deal you want, before you sign on the dotted line.

It doesn't cost anything to go right back to your Dealer and see what they can do for you. Maybe they will feel sorry for you and give you a great deal. Let us know how it goes.

You could return your car but the dealer will give you their trade in value for it so as EV stated, you'll lose about $5000.

It's a used car now and it will get a used car market value.

As far as sucking, would you buy a used Versa for the same price as a new Versa?

Well you can pretty much automatically deduct $1K from that $11.6 K number that KBB is reporting... dealerships will call this the "recovery surcharge" which means that's how much they pay to inspect the vehicle and repair or replace anything that needs it, wash and detail it, etc. It's a bunch of BS, but they still work it over on you.

As far as trading it in... they'd love to let you do it! But as stated, they're going to low-ball you on the price ($4 to $5 K less than you paid). Then they'll flip the car around, sell it for $1K less than a new one and tell people it's only been owned for a few days and sell you a new Altima for full price. Sounds like a good deal for them.

That's what it is going to be like once I step foot in that dealership. Those guys are there to make their money and lowball you, unless you play the game better.

My decision is still pending. I really do want that '08 Altima! I bought my Versa SL for $20k and they'll end up giving me anywhere between $14k-16k if you look at it.

If I were you - I'd go in with the following strategy...

walk in on a laid back day - say you've been driving the Versa and been very happy with it - but that you're itching for someone more fun.

Let them guide you to the car you actually want - test drive it and make it appear that you're really spontaneously itching to buy the particular vehicle because of the particular driving experience.

Then once they put you in the office for more talk - frown a little and realize you haven't paid for the Versa in full and you're worried about stretching your financial means. Assuming that the dealer = the same that sold you the vehicle, they've already made a profit selling you the Versa.

Once you trade in the Versa - they make another margin on the resale & also for the difference you'll pay on whatever more expensive vehicle you'll be getting.

You can only realistically hope they'll make the profit from the resale of the Versa & essentially let you have the replacement vehicle at cost. The dealer gets rid of an additional vehicle & makes a profit from the resale of the Versa.

*shrug*

I been there, done that. First Versa was $19,724, had less than 7600 miles on it when I traded it in. Second Versa was $18,3xx. My Credit Union just refinanced what was left on my loan with the second Versa as the new collateral and this left me owing the Dealership $5600.

So I lost roughly $4500 (because the other $1100 is what I had already paid off on the first Versa. My dealership also took my trade at sale-value (I found out that the selling price on my car when it went back out was $450 more than they gave me back for it - you may not be so lucky... I had the owner involved because I was lied to by the salesman who sold me my car.)
