i know that its a good idea to replace the turbo before you put the motor in. In a better time, I might be able to do that, but the motorset comes in tomorrow, and I have other things to pay for right now. So i'm wondering if its a worth while attempt later on to try to replace the turbo w/ the motor in the car, or if when that time comes, i'm better off removing the motor anyways.

says what?

if your turbo is fine there is no need replacing it...run the motor as it is...if you see that there is shaft play or another problem with the turbo then replace it.

i'm saying when the time comes to upgrade, will i be able to remove the turbo and install a new unit with the motor in the car. There are cars, a Twinturbo Z for example, which the process is do-able, but a royal pain in the ***, and thus it is highly recommended and logical to simply remove the motor and replace turbos with the motor on a stand. Just wondering if that was the case w/ the CA in an S13.

Korey (GoofyATX) is pulling his turbo and manifold off his engine while it's in the car. He called me yesterday *****ing...a LOT about it :) it seems it's rather troublesome, but I'm sure it's doable.

ive done it, its a real pain in the arse but it isnt too bad, just frustrating. make sure you have a variety of wrenches of the same size because there is minimal space to work in and youll need the right style wrench for the job. and it helps to have small hands. oh, and i understand using air tools will allow the job to be done in 30 minutes or less. never seen it done though, just heard. good luck.

isnt that what youre supposed to do when youre working on your car? i thought it was some unwritten law that youre supposed to hurt yourself. now that ive changed out the turbo while the engine was in the car once, i feel i could do it again in a relatively short amount of time.

That's one reason I loved DSMs.. turbo was right up front. Going back and forth between turbos took an hour tops for both removal and install.

LOL @ nab911! But in answer, you can do it while it's in the car, but from what I understand you'll have to take the exhaust manifold off also.

I wish I had. But now that I know that I have bad rings, I'm not going to worry about it untill I pull the motor and tear it down and rebuild it.

float: jeez, cry more!!

iiiim just joking, i do it as much as you do. im just jealous that i cant do it on every thread on the first page of the CA forums in under 10 minutes.

the real pain in the anus was that since my downpipe was welded to my o2 sensor housing with rust i had to take out the turbo/manifold/downpipe as one unit. that involved undoing the engine mounts and pulling up on that bracket that the stock i/c piping mounts to on the turbo side of the engine, right behind the timing cover, with my engine hoist so the manifold would come off the studs and i could muscle it out of the engine bay. that and the oil and coolant lines. those sucked too.
