ok so i got this problem, and ive gotten 40 diff opinions. So i thought maybe some1 who knows more about the 89 240sx 12 valve could tell me whats up. the car hasnt been itself in the past months, at 2500 rpm i get this rattlin from the motor every gear- at first i thought maybe i needed to tighten the rockers, then it started to backfire not loud but i could notice it, i thought it was because of the exghaust i pput on( Borla 3inch turbo with 2 3/4 tubing to the cat, nope. So i put an injen intake on, lil improvement in the horsepower but not enough to really feel the moneys worth. So i checked my vacuum lines and there all intact. So my buddy told me it could be either my intake or exghuast vavle? Its a good chattering,at which some 1 told me its my timing chain- So i thought i would get some more advice before i rip it all open and pay mad money for a head job. Oh and does any1 know if they make polished valve covers for the 12 valve?

the valve train doesn't get adjusted. the back firing could be due to built up carbon deposits on your valve(s). Rattling could be alot of things, but i'm guessing timing chain since it's so notorious for failure.

so you think i should replace the timing chain before i send the head for work?-it would probably be better to do both but the cash flow aint good lol. its got 197000. i think its about time for a new motor

yeah..197 is alot of miles. you should consider your options well. Rebuilding the head and leaving an old 197k bottom end there (definitely not the way i would go). You could replace the chain now, then have to do it all over again when you do the head, DEFEINITELY not the way i would go.

Basically find out exactly what the noise is first. it might not be the chain, maybe even a simple fix. Take it to a good mechanic to be diagnosed.

do you still have the pipe running out of the exhaust just after the exhaust manifold, it runs up into your factory air box, my car was making what sounds like the same noise you are explaining, and it was coming from that, so to fix the problem I took out the pipe and threaded a bolt in the whole of the exhaust.
