Post

my fellow nico community,

My car was running really roughly. it would burp, not rev, burn smoke. etc. i replaced the maf and the car ran a ton better but the car is still burping, running rich, blowing smoke (black and then white after reving), there is black smoke coming from the turbo/down pipe area. on the positive, the car revs and what not like normal (still rough, drives rough and powerless, but the engine gains and loses revs like normal without any weird noise from the engine), i noticed that when i do rev it, the blow off valve goes off but down not make the usual loud noise. i though that it was stuck open, and that's why the car was running really rich but the bov is fine. i reved the car by hand and felt the bov open and shoot out air. the pressure of the air leaving the bov was really low though and the turbo is making a really quiet hum.

so i am thinking a blow turbo? does anyone have any suggestions before i rip the turbo out? anyone experience this before? i tried searching but the new search bar (it's been a while since i have been on here) did not work for me? i have no idea why. any help would be appreciated, thank you!

oh and i might post a vid later if i get the time.

cheers!

White smoke can be bad, but black is fuel. I what is it tuned with, and what kinda of AFR's are you seeing? And what kinda of turbo if its a T25/T28 rebuild it for piece of mind its very cheap.

i don't have an air fuel gauge but i can tell that it is running rich (black smoke). the sr20det is from a 96 180sx so i believe it is just a t25. how hard is it to rebuild?

Parts kits (the good one) is like 100 bucks, about 1.5 hours to rebuild it, but you should send the shaft out for balancing before you rebuild.

good advice. i am going to run a compression test and check shaft play and what not tomorrow. if there is a definite turbo problem i am ripping it out and seeing if it is rebuild worthy.

but it sounds like the turbo to y'all?

Check your oil first. You may have blown a head gasket, in which case it would be milky, or if it is low it could mean the seals on your turbo could be going bad.
